Have done the pinch test on my horse and he is really dehydrated. Waterer works, left a tub of water in and soaked his nets before I left the yard. Also gave him a sugar beet soup. He is on 1-3ml of Sedaline daily as he is on box rest/pen rest with restricted exercise. Any ideas? My vet is in the Gambia til Mon!!

You could try adding salt to his feed that will make him drink and help with hydration.
My horse was on box rest last month and I noticed he wasnt drinking as much water as normal perhaps they dont need as much if they are in rest.

I thought about that but didnt want to do it if he didnt drink much after. He has a massive salt lick and a Horslyx too, I dropped a few sugar cubes into his water bucket to tempt him.
I thought its perhaps because he is eating adlib hay etc, but the pinch test marks stay up until you squish them back down

The reason I suggested salt was that a friend had a pony on our yard who didnt drink his water they only added it for a week and the problem was solved. You wont hurt him adding the salt I would give it a try.Cheaper than calling your vet out.God arent they a worry

You could try apple in the water to see if that encourages drinking - although hopefully in the apple bobbing some water will be taken up anyway

[/ QUOTE ]Thats his favourite game to play but had none today. Will raid the fruit bowl tomorrow.

I can second this. Daisy love apple bobbing and takes up loads of water with it. Relaly good for getting her drinking if I need to for any reason

Exactly how many seconds does his skin need to become flat again? If its over 4 secs, get vets advice. Hope all goes well!

I pinched, turned around to chat and then turned back and they had gone down but was still obvious where they had been. Vet is going to be contacted 1st thing Mon anyway but just dont want him to croak beforehand. I thought it may be a side effect from the sedation but the leaflet says nothing.

Can you get any Vetsearch Recharge? Some feed stores and tack shops stock it. It's an electrolyte which you orally syringe and it contains something which stimulates a thirst response and without fail the horse drinks within ten minutes.
