can't beleive that it looks like our 4yr may have to be put down...he's very lame after a frog fall in the field(legs full out behind)..and vet thinks he may have totally put out stifle beyond repair...having two weeks on stong painkillers then some x-rays to comfirm his feelings...but he has to be turned out due to his wind problems

in some ways i'm glad the vet has been very honest in his feelings...he knows the pony is insured but is fairly sure what the outcome is going to be...but the pony was given a two week period and then x-ray..by all accounts a hair-line fracture will show up clear if its broken but he is more inclined to think the knee cap has been torn..
the pony is meant to be on box rest but also suffers copd can't cope with living in....this is a new thing in him he was fine the end of the winter when we brought him!
so even if surgery maybe possible he would have to be on 6mths box rest two months walking in hand...thats if the vets wanted to op with his breathing...its a horrible circle to be in cant come in because of wind cant be out because of leg.....he will never be able to compete after a stifle op..just light hack and wont be able to live in...and prob unrideable during the summer months due to copd....
he was brought as a progect as had been very badly handled and was on the edge of being dangerous...but over the months has become a lovely person who was just very much misunderstood...still has his moments but few and far between...poor little pony

Poor little man - and poor you.

Don't panic re the box rest though. My weaving box walker had to be on box rest for 7 months - quite a lot of that cross tied but as soon as she was off the cross tying we put her out in a stable sized patch and she was FAR happier there. So if you and your vet do decide that there might be a reason to persevere do consider the option of putting him out in a tiny area. I found a good way to deal with it was to set up an electric fence "lane" alongside a permanent fence and then move horse on one stable length each day.

I am so sorry. From the sounds of things he has had a tough time in life. Vets always give the worst prognosis, he may come through it yet. If he doesn't then he ends his days in a home that loves him. No animal could ask for more.

poor little soul, and poor you. Sounds like you've put a lot of patience in. Keeping everything crossed for you and sending (((((vibes))))) in pony's direction.

I ditto the stable sized paddock for box resting COPD ponies, worked bril for us when my old pony puntured his fetlock joint.

Oooh, ouch, you poor things. I sincerely hope that it can be resolved...what a horrible accident. There are some great thoughts for boxrest/limited turnout above so don't despair and have a huge hug and lots of healing vibes.......x

My boss's hunter that couldnt be boxrested as he box walked and couldnt go in a stable sized electric patch because he jumped out  recovered well turned out in one of those joinup pens (homemade out of arris/security fencing bought cheaply off Ebay ;) )

thank you all for your support...we did try him in a small patch in the field but he went mental and trashed the patch by just box walking it all night....not much help to a resting leg...he is turned out in a large patch next to his girl friend..and just wanders around quitely so at least he is happy and sort of resting...
