Really old saddles....

What would you do with them? i've got 4 really old saddles that i've tried to sell on ebay a number of times but TBH i'm really not surprised they won't sell, they are either horrid cheap things that came with horses 'bought with tack' or they are pushing 40+ years old, they are cluttering up my tack room, gathering dust yet i can't just chuck them away, (well one i maybe could) but the others are made from nice leather (one was really expensive in its day) and i was wondering if there are any charities in africa or anywhere that might want them, but i've no idea where to start looking.... any thoughts?

there is nothing actually wrong with any of them stitching/tree wise, they're just not something anyone would buy, likewise, i've tonnes of old bridles/stirrup leathers/assorted bits of tack that again no one would buy, yet it seems a shame to just bin it, thinking of some of the rope contraptions i've seen third world horses wearing

Any thoughts????

(have been spring cleaning, can you tell???)

How about donating them to the ILPH? I'm sure they'd be thrilled to have them

I took all my mares tack when she retired to a local charity in Newcastle that provide rides and time with ponies for inner city kids. They were absolutely stoked with all stuff including a couple of saddles, bits, old numnahs. You might find if the stuff is useable that a local horse charity might be happy to take they off your hands.

See I have a really old one as well...but I dont want to sell it as my saddler told me the back of the saddle is so narrow - it cause her to constantly disunite in canter.
Thinking of donating it...will try ebay

I had an old saddle with a broken tree to boot. Stuck it on my gate put £20 on it and when I came home it was gone with £20 on my doorstep...result....otherwise give it to your local

You will be able to sell it for a few ££££ to someone who does a lot of breaking. They use old saddles, not to ride on, but to get the horse used to the idea of something on its back.

I would be really careful about selling old saddles which are unsuitable for use i.e. narrow panels/broken trees etc. I have seen quite a few poor horses who have been ridden in these at dealer’s yards, and quite frankly those saddles should have been destroyed.
If the saddle is unsound I would take a knife to the seat and score it so that the saddle cannot be used by unscrupulous people. For the sake of a few pounds I wouldn’t want to feel guilty that the saddle was actually being used on a poor horse somewhere.
If the saddle is sound then donating it to a charity is a lovely thought.
