Its a long story and i may not explain it properly ..

I got my pony last year, free to good home due to laminitis, and her being unrideable.

Shes a very hypo pony, really strong willed and stubborn. But also very sweet.

I have had a few "issues" with her rearing while leading and getting excited and bombing off, but nothing genuinly dangerous, but someone told me the other day that the reason her old owners wanted rid is because she seriously injured someone :s

I have asked a few people at the riding school shes from, most talked to me, then blocked me as soon as i asked about a "accident". Strange i thought but now two people have also said yes there was a accident, but they wont go into details just in case :/

So i have messaged her old owner, asking if its true? Can i know the details to prevent it happening again. And if its not shes should know people are spreading rumours about her yard.

Havent had a reply yet, doesnt bother me if somthing did happen. Any horse can hurt someone, and shes in a forever home now.

Just dunno whether i should have left it and not emailed the old owner?

What would you have done?? :(

My first thought is why are you riding a pony that was given away on the basis she shouldn't be ridden cos of lami ????????

Or have I got that wrong.

Her accident may have been caused by her being in pain.

How can you say you're not bothered if an accident did happen again ?

Is this a wind up or what.

IMO you did the right thing, you need to know (if it did happen) what happened to prevent it potentionally happening again. They are being very irresponsible by not telling you.

I think you have done the right thing & if the old owner does not reply I would ring her. It is important that you know what happened so in the future you can prevent the same thing happpening & you getting hurt. I've found out stuff about my horse that the old owners shoud have told me but didn't & it would have been a lot easier if they had just told me the truth in the first place.

I think she means while being led or handled from ground:) I would of contacted the old owner to find out and hopefully prevent it happening again or at least to be aware. It could of being caused by a no of things maybe whatever it was could be prevented :)

She's not mentioned riding her... she was on about what she's like inhand:)

Yeah shes not ridden, i mean im not gonna go "omg my pony is sooo evil" even if she did do it, im not going to sell her ect. It dont care what shes done in the past its how she is now :)

Seems reasonable to me to ask, especially in light of the 'gossip' you've heard. As long as your message conveyed that you are happy with the pony regardless of whatever happened or however bad it was, I can't see why the old owner would object to telling you. If it was terrible (i.e. someone had died as a result) I can understand them being reticent to tell you in case you threw a wobbly at not being told. But, on the other hand, some would say they should have been upfront with you from the start, so these rumours wouldn't have started now. Like you say, any horse can cause a freak accident - even a terrible accident. Maybe it was as a result of her rearing habit (which you've now mastered)?

It may have been preventable & not entirely down to her, but I think I would want to know so that I could take precautions. Maybe she's unrideable due to some other reason, ie not the laminitis.

If you have children around I would definitely want to know more. It's irresponsible of them not to have been honest with you.

I assume you are not riding and your problems have been in hand.

I learnt, very early on in life, you do not get something for nothing and although your pony was free she came with many problems. You are happy to deal with these problems and deal with them as and when they arise and she has found a forever home. Thats great to hear.

So far as contacting her previous owner, I don't think you have done anything wrong to beat yourself up about. It would be nice for you to know what exactly you are dealing with to ensure her safety and yours and others at all times.

I think I would have done the same thing if it mattered to me that much. If you hear something then thats great, if not, always treat your pony with extra caution and don't get complacent, (we shouldn't any with any of our horses but in your circumstances I think this is fundamental).

I really hope you enjoy your pony, as much as she will allow you. x

I thinkwe live in a day now where anyone can sue you at the drop of a hat, so they're probably keeping 'schtum' because of that perhaps, or maybe if it was that bad of an accident, wanted rid and not have a reminder of it again maybe?

Its not exactly a habit, and its only happened a few times. But she does get very worked up very easily, like i was in the bottom of our school field (lunging) and she kept spooking at somthing, so i was trying to get her to walk past it and after about 10mins she was very wound up, and bombed off jumping 2 4ft fences that where in her way (not bad for a 12hh ;)) knowing her i can see how somthing could have happened. But when shes got her security blanket (me) my little 4 year old cousin can cuddle and groom her :) which is why i need to know, otherwise i wouldnt have asked :)

Sorry, just read my email. Sound like a mother hen, didn't mean too. Just meant, stay safe x My Archie is the most placid horse but I took my eye off the ball for a moment and he dumped me, breaking my collar bone, totally avoidable, totally my fault.

You have every right to ask.

I have recently taken on a horse that had never been ridden. Well, actually he was ridden once and sat down breaking the girls leg. I asked the owner about it and she told me everything and what exactly happened. I wasn't being nosy I just wanted to know what had happened so I could prepare myself for when it comes to getting on him. Plus, I can now see that he wasn't ready, probably wasn't being asked clearly enough and was more than likely scared. I don't think he would have hurt the girl on purpose but yet has been labelled as "dangerous".

Someone could have fallen off and injured themselves and it be completely their fault, which is maybe why they haven't told you but you have done the right thing and the fact people are blocking you after you ask about the accident makes me think they have something to hide.

I hope you find the answers you need and I'm glad that the pony has got a home for life.
