Ok. I took my horse for a ride today. Came back brushed her off etc. I brushed her face and didn't notice anything unusual. Put hay down and left her in her stable. Came back an hour ago to muck out etc, and theres this huge lump on her lip. It looks like its pussy (sorry gross) but its not bleeding. This is my first horse and I'm sorry if I'm jumping to conclusions cos I've read nasty things about strangles etc, and I've never seen anything like this before. Kicking myself now I should have taken photo for on here. I showed it to another horse owner who saif it looked like an abscess. any ideas anyone? I've looked around her stable for nails or anything else she could have cut it on but nothing. nothing but hay and straw in her stable. Buckets aren't broken, only thing I can see is a bit of piping on another edge of another stable, but its tucked away and I don't see how she could reach it to catch herself.. sorry really worried!!

Phone your vet and ask them? I know its the weekend but they might be able to say whether it needs a call out or not - my vets are always happy for me to ask them

Echo the above. Unlikely to be strangles - my guess would be something in the hay that she might be allergic to, a thorn or something that's caused an extreme reaction. But if you're worried, speak to the vet.

It cant do any harm to just phone them up and ask them - for your peace of mind if nothing else! I hope she'll be fine soon though

Probablly be worth getting a vet out, they can drain it and give you antibiotics to help get rid of the infection.

My horse had one a few years ago, (his was very nasty mind,) I had the vet who gave me antibiotics and told me to keep him in (to keep it clean and protect from flies (it was July.)) I didnt ride him, but probablly could have done, it was when I was doing exams so it was quite a handy to have an excuse to give him a bit of a holiday!

If it was strangles the signs are swollen glands and nasal discharge (the main signs anyway), so I wouldnt worry about that tbh.

Clean the wound with some salt water, if its on the lip I wouldnt use anything too strong without vets advice.

It could just be that she has caught it on something and its swollen quicky, as you know if we bite our gums by accident they come up quite big quite quickly. If its on her lip and she was showing no pain when you rode it is unlikely she is in a lot of pain. Or like someone else said she may have a thorne or a little splinter of hay in there.

If it is worse tomorrow, and there is still discharge coming out give the vet a ring and see what they say. Perhaps ask YO or another very experienced owner to have a look aswell.
