NB: This is really long, I'm sorry
Seriously
How on earth did I ever manage to pass my interview in order to get this dog?
Yesterday, my friend brought her 12 week old (bitch) puppy into work for a collar (she had to have a cat collar!). Without thinking, she just brought her straight down to the office. Herman was fine with her - although she didn't go on the floor with him - right up until the point I picked her up.
To be fair, he was still fine, but he was a bit more jumpy-up to see her, he was growlybarking (hackles were down and tail wasn't stiff!) and really quite in your face about wanting to see her. Handed her back to my friend and he came and sniffed my hoody (ignored the puppy from then on) and did the most bizarre mouth-sucky thing which I have never seen before in my life (and it made me howl with laughter, tbh) - first question - why?! What was it?!
Then he started humping thin air
This is the first time he's ever shown any sign of humping anything. Was assuming it was a dominance (attempt!) rather than a sexy-time attempt?
From then on, I spent most of my time in the shop, rather than the office (confusingly, I have 2 offices, one at the shop & one on my own, where I spend most of my time) and whenever Herman heard me shout to someone, he would bark. Normal voice was fine, laughing fine, if he could see me through the window, he was fine but as soon as I shouted (which was quite often as we were moving stuff about) he'd get really upset. Why? He never normally does, so is this related to the puppy in any way and how? Whenever I went back down to the office, he wouldn't try and hump me (or anyone else for that matter) but he would sit as close to me as he possibly could and lick where I'd held the puppy. Ended up spraying myself in deodorant.
Which calmed him down slightly.
Then last night, he was really....stressed is the wrong word, but he just couldn't get comfy. [If you don't know; currently we are living with my father in law and sleeping on a mattress on the floor. The dog is [was?] used to being in a crate away from us but since we've been at the farm, there is no room whatsoever, anywhere for his crate -little rooms, narrow corridors etc- so he has been in with us. Normally not a problem as he just sleeps at the bottom of the mattress on the floor.] He started out at the bottom of the bed, then came and stood on me, staring at me. Got him laid down, but he was rightrightright close - head on pillow, on top of me close - so shoved him lower down, so he got off the bed, went to lay down by the door, but got up, went to Chris' side of the bed, did the same, got shoved off, laid across the pair of us, lay between us, laid on our feet, got back off etc - this went on for about 20 minutes, so Chris got up and took him for a drink then brought him back and he eventually settled back at the bottom of the bed and has been absolutely fine ever since - am even wearing same hoody :dirtycow: and he isn't bothered.
Is all this from the puppy do you think? Chris is convinced - I am not - that he thought that the puppy was coming home with us and he's been stressed from that but isn't that taking anthropomorphism slightly too far? He is still entire, but is due to be booked in soon to be castrated. He was fine with the puppy, right up until I held her.
I'm not sure what I'm asking about - he is fine now and completely unstressed, he is on his back and snoring :classy: maybe I'm just asking WHY the reaction? Is it due to him being entire? Is it because I'm HIS human? Jealousy? Bullying? What?
Also - and I will have to put pictures up later because my stupid phone won't upload them - he went to the vets yesterday (he has itchy ears AGAIN) and the vet weighed him. I held my breath because I think he has gone skinny and scrawny again (please make him stop growing soon) and he does look thin, rather than lean to my eyes. He has a definate waist, you can see his ribs when he runs and you can feel them, easily, when he's sat down. He is currently being fed 475g Royal Canin Maxi Junior and a third of a tray of Puppy Naturediet, twice a day (he's 13months old) along with a myriad of treats, fish paste
uke: etc when out walking or training. Anyway, I thought I was about to be told he was far too thin and I was about to be reported to the RSPCA but no - he's 37kg and apparently that is far too fat for a Weim. You could have knocked me over with...well anything. I'd probably put him at a condition score 2 at the moment, but it seems my eye is well out. I reallyreallyreally don't see that he's fat but he is a BIG dog - much bigger than the short haired Weims I know. His brother is slightly smaller, but not much. If he needs to go on a diet then I'll put him on one, but I would really appreciate opinions when I manage to upload these pictures....
Sorry, this has got super long and rambly. All I have to offer as compensation is either the dogs breakfast or some Sainsburys Thai Green Chicken soup...
