I bought a saddle in the summer (Kent and Masters jump saddle) that was 'fitted' and sold to me new by a master saddler. Long story short it doesn't fit and never will fit (several saddlers later - not going into it here).

I need to sell it as I've bought a replacement. It cost me £750 and has been used 22 times.

I've advertised it locally and on ebay but no interest....so what should I be asking?

I'm desperate not to loose too much money but equally need to sell so need to know I am asking a reasonable price....

HELP!!

Sold mine for £400 last month, it was advertised on preloved for months and months then I had 3 people want to buy it at once.

Mine was bought new and had been ridden in about 20 times.

It was advertised for 500 but there was no interest and someone text me out of the blue and offered to pay for it there and then, so I said yes. I find if people are buying second hand they want a bargain otherwise why not just buy new. Not a huge fan of them to be honest, was fitted to my mare but didn't fit her either!

Having been looking at good quality 2nd hand saddles recently that are selling for less than 50% of the new price, if you get £400 that would be a good deal.
There are some really good ones around and I have just paid £500 for a nearly new dressage saddle that retails at over £2k

Given the trouble I've had with it (and the saddler) I was advised to take it back and try and get my money back (as saddle was never fit for purpose) but it's a lot of hassle, and the horse world being the horse world I know the saddler would bad mouth me etc (he's done the same to me about other people (friends of mine) in the past).

I guess I'll just have to swallow the loss and be glad that at least I now have a saddle that fits my horse.

TBH, I would be chasing for my money back. If it wasn't fit for purpose and was never going to be suitable, then I would go back and be quietly determined to be fully refunded.

At the end of the day, if his way of dealing with unhappy custoemrs is to bad mouth them, then people are going to pretty quickly lose respect for his opinion.

I would have thought that you could do more damage to his reputation if too many stories like your go around...

I bought a nearly new Kent & Masters GP 6 months(ish) ago for £350.

I really don't think nearly new secondhand saddles are making very good money these days.

Wow, that's quite a loss to take!

Thanks for replying though!

Unfortunately, the price you pay for ANYTHING brand new is not what its worth - its what the seller thinks is the highest number they can get away with. Hence a new car devalues massively the moment you drive it off the dealer's forecourt. Second hand is rarely second best in my experience.

Crikey, my saddler is very discreet and she is a friend!!! She sees a lot and you never ever hear her bad mouthing off anyone. I know she would steer me away from anyone dodgy but would not volunteer the info as gossip.

So another thumbs up Ellie Martin. My long suffering friend!

I think its at least worth a conversation with the original saddler. If you explain the situation and ask them to consider taking it back the worst they can do is say no. Personally I wouldnt be going in demanding anything either, the potential backlash would put me off too. But if you catch them in reasonable mood they might offer you a better price than the second hand market, if anything to maintain their professional reputation.

I had a very reasonable experience with a local saddler who fitted a saddle for me. I then had a bad fall and felt the saddle didn't offer as much security as I would like, and the very nice saddler took saddle back for same money I had paid a year before! That was before she knew I would be buying the next one from her, which of course I did! So its always worth asking...

Obviously.

And?????

Oh, don't get me wrong I know in an ideal world this is what I should be doing....

But I have a hell of a lot else going on at the moment and I really can't be doing with it.

If only I could get someone to do it on my behalf!!

I'm just so tired all the time I'm not sure I'm up for the fight of getting the money back......

And I'm fully aware of the state of the second hand market but I do know that some saddles keep their value better than others...hence me trying to see what sort of price I should be looking for.
