Really unsure what to do..... HELP PLEASE!!!!!

why ask for people's opinions if you're just going to disregard dozens of replies telling you to walk away? THE HORSE IS LAME - one last, blunt time!

thanks for all your replies... i am getting the message. avoid at all costs, just such a shame....... :-((

am very sad now. i just see images of his sweet face.....

Its really difficult I saw the pic's you posted and he is lovely and you most probaly thought he would fly through the vetting. The thing is that he won't be covered by insurance and then you are could be talking about a horse could maybe cost £3,000 to buy upwards that could cost you 100's or 1,000's in vet treatment. Its not just the money aspect, its the emotional aspect. every time he isn't "right" you will worry. You might not want to push as him as hard as you might have.

If you really feel that you can't walk away. I think Shadowmonkeys was a very good suggestion.

Yes the idea of a trial does seem good, need to talk to owner about it.
i'm glad you saw the pics of him, he's such a cutie... lots of potential and i really felt right on him.
i know what everyone is saying is right, but all of my horses that i have (currently 4) have been given a chance. i know it sounds silly, but my first pony who i've had since a 5 yr old who is now 19 i bought at reading market, he wasn't vetted back then it wasn't done as much as now, and he looked a real state, then i rehomed an exracehorse with one eye and pulled tendons, then my dad's horse had to have a tieback and hobday, we didn't vet him, we just fell in love, but he was £2k, and my other boy has lots of issues, i don't know.... i am very emotional about it.... i know that everyone is saying there are other horses out there, but i've just had a quick look on H&H and Horsemart and apart from mares, and warmbloods (which i don't want) there isn't much out there.

i'm sorry to everyone for going on.... i'm sure this post is getting boring for you now.

Presumably this problem will come up if other potential buyers have him vetted, so it may be worth waiting a bit to see if he's still up for sale. Then you might get him at a better price?

Taking a gamble with £2k is one thing, but nearly £5k is a LOT of money for a horse that may not be able to do the job you want it to. He's quite young to have all those problems, especially if he's low mileage.

you're insurance exclusions would be huge
he wouldn't be re-sellable
the lameness could get worse meaning that you are not covered for vets bill, you can't ride and you can't sell

i know its hard but it is a lot harder to have a horse that is useless. my horse was 1/2 10th lame - he had spavin. after surgery, £5k vets bills and 2yrs he is back in work. Avoid the pain - find another friend - that's why you had him vetted!

Good luck

I would leave it. OK you liked him, but next week on horsemart there could be one sound as a pound for 4k. Your budget is decent and you should be able to find something that reflects this. Sorry that you liked him so, but you have to face up to the fact he is likely to cost you a lot more than 5k in the long run. I've walked away from horses with less problems than you have described and I haven't lost a wink of sleep over it.

Although it's hard I would also just walk away. Horses are always popping up for sale and at least you've got one to keep you occupied.
Think seriously before going down the trial route. My friend had a horse vetted and he had, had puss in the foot a couple of weeks before. We knew the seller (and really trusted him)and the the horse was unbroken. The vet didn't fail him, but said he wanted to come back and look at the leg in a month or sa as it was still slightly up. When he came back in a month he found a thickened tendon. Despite this there was no way she could not buy him then. The seller really had no idea and even paid for the tendon to be scanned. He didn't have any problems with it, but she didn't do much with him. It was a problem though when she came to sell him. I know that you think there won't be another for that price, but there will.

I have decided to leave it, have rung the seller and left a message, will tell her that he's lame and i'm not prepared to take the risk. Have now rung a dealer ( with excellent rep) to ask him what's out there atm, he said for something i want i need to be paying £8k +!!
I said i haven't got that budget, but i don't mind a horse that is green, i enjoy a challenge, as long as he's got the scope and potential! He said he'll get back to me in a weeks time, he's going over to ireland to look at some horses so fingers crossed. I do agree with everyone after having a long hard think. I just hope something comes up in my price range.
Its such a shame, i really thought he'd sail through the vetting, just goes to show how important getting a vetting done is!!! especially with horses over £4k.

thank you to everyone who helped me and gave me their advice, i really appreciate it. X :-)

What a load of rubbish. £5k ish - to £6k based on age and experience.

of course he'd say that, he's probably got something that £ to sell you

keep looking, there ARE decent horses out there that dont cost the earth, and arent lame

Well.... don't know if anyone is interested.... but got a call from the seller today....

she's prepared to negotiate on the price...!!! oh no i hear everyone saying!.....

i said i'd think about it..... (so not yes and not no) and let her know, and i also said that i had already put the feelers out for other horses, she said she wants to sell him to me.
She's had an offer of someone having him on loan with a view to buy, to compete, but she wants to sell him.

OH dear!
If she went down to say a £1- 1500k i might be tempted, as who knows when he may break down, i don't have a crystal ball!!! And if he did break down, i'm sure i could sell him as a happy hack for that sort of money.....
