My horse's poo is horrendously stinky. If he poos on the yard we can smell it 8 boxes away. If one of his is in the muck skip it has to be emptied asap, nobody wants to be near it. In his stable the smell is so strong, and really odd. It doesn't smell like any horse ***** I've ever come across in 35 years

So, I happened to be a the vets today collecting meds and asked the receptionist if there were any tests that can be done on poo (I was clutching a bag of it, and smell was rising at this point) to see why on earth it smells so much etc etc, or could she find out if any particular health issue, such as liver disease, would make it smell so strongly. She said obviously there are specific tests for certain things like Salmonella but would go and do some research and get back to me. She asked me take the smelly bag away with me :p

Have any of your horses got this problem or have you come across it before? I used to think it was due to any meds he was on, like Gastroguard or antibios, but he's been off these for a while now. He is also very very wet in the stable (wee rises around your boot soles even on clean Aquamax) but his actual urine looks normal.

Just thought I'd ask, thanks peeps :)

If it's normal for him and he's fine in every other way I wouldn't worry about it. You could feed him live yoghurt for a week I suppose to see if that re-balanced the gut flora but unless it's a new development or he's suddenly losing weight etc etc etc then I wouldn't worry. Buy pegs for everyone on the yard to clip to their noses lol x

Bringing us poo on a day other than Friday and we would probably take it in!!!:p Salmonella testing on multiple samples but not really relevant as said horse has no signs of this....
I'd suggest you move up from natural yog to Bio-premium I think it's called. Recently we've been talking to other clinics about cases like this and the consensus seems to be that this is prob the best probiotic in this type of case.
Might be worth a try just to give the olfactory senses a rest!!!:D
Hope the rest of them are better!!!

No help to you but I,ve had horses for nearly 40 years and did not know that horse poo smelt, but i,m on steriod drops for polups in my nose and have just found out poo does stink!!

My horse's droppings quite often smell 'sour' but not from eight boxes away! I did wonder about it the other day and they do seem to vary on a weekly basis and depending on what sort of bedding he's on. He seems healthy enough to me and has been like this for most of the ten years I have owned him

My friends horses poo smells peppery??? It isnt horrendous but definately not like the other horses. If its suddenly happened and doesnt go right in a few days I would speak to vet again

One of my neds suffers with very smelly dung at certain times of the year, this only began after he had a bout of laminitis 6 years ago which obviously affected his gut, the texture also changed and it would stick to the shavings fork. I put it down to the affect the laminitis has had on the gut and it clears up pretty quick with Coligone.
