Can anyone help. My mare has always reared when worried but if you ignore her she just goes oh ok not that scary then and is out there jumping 7 double clears BN last 7 times out and doing well discovery and ready to move on. Really sensitive in the mouth and only wheres straight bar nathes. Last few weeks her routine has changed in that she hasnt had much turn out and has been like sitting on a time bomb. After 2 years of owning her she is fabulous in the stable and neighs like mad whenever she sees me. If in the field if only just turned out comes galloping and has never tried to throw me off. Knocked all feed on the head - just on hay. However today she was WEIRD . We went for a hack (me and a friend whos horse is schoolmaster) When we turned round to come home my horse napped - ie stopped going forward and threatened to rear (we were approx 1.5 miles from home)so we rode past the entrance to the yard - she went happily we went for another mile then when we came to turn round to come back she napped and reared away from home???????????? Does she hate the yard she is kept at?? Any ideas??

How strange, firstly do you mean turning back on yourself to come home? Is it possible to find a way of making the route more circular, even if it means just going round something?

Also maybe she knows she will be put in for the night when she gets in and she is bored in her stable. Not a lot you can do about that in this weather I'm guessing but maybe she needs to get rid of more energy perhaps with faster hacks?

My horse did quite similar early december, i hacked it out like i usually did by myself, and when going past a field with other horses he went up(he had never ever done this previously) carried on like nothing had happened went past the back entrance of the yard absolutely fine carried on and came to the front of yard and he flipped out and kept rearing away from home until i came off (he kept going up and then when he went down he would put his head between his legs and doing mini bucks and then up again) so i came flying off(landed on my feet very proud of myself:D) and he scattered to the other side of the road and cowered. i got back on and he went straight up the drive with no question.
anyways long story over,
i came upon the conclusion that it was his either his feed changed to calm and condition, or that he wasn't getting hay because they all moved fields.

what i'm trying to say maybe your horse is just a little confused by the feed change because later on i passed the field with other horses and these horses had hayledge and my guess was that mine was jealous and he wanted to stay with these guys rather than go home?

just a quick thought maybe she wanted to stay out because she was getting to stretch her legs and she may have been enjoying it?

i hope that helps
