Today my older (31), non-horsey git of a brother accused me of "starving our ponies to death" because they are on restricted grazing and you can see the ribs of one of them. The ribby one, Cosmo, is 18 and arthritic and this is the first year he hasn't been chubby. However, we saw the vet very recently and I said I was concerned about his weight and she said that it was best to keep him that way. I've since done my best to keep him at around that weight and although he is maybe a bit slimmer, I have also upped his feed accordingly and have been using a weigh tape.

My brother's comments really upset me and he has nothing to do with the ponies and all I seem to get is criticism for how I care for them. My non-horsey stepdad is always trying to guilt trip me into letting them out into the big field with the other horses because he says they must be bored or lonely. The fact is, this is one of the first years that Cosmo hasn't had to be locked in with lami so I'm obviously doing something right. He doesn't look wonderful but I am doing my best. They are also not starved - although they have hardly any grass, they are fed hay and also have fast fibre and safe and sound with some stand-free supplement. They also get equibites and Cosmo has cortaflex.

Please can someone tell me that I'm doing it right? I don't like my horses and ponies to be thin and although the rib-factor of Cosmo concerns me, I am going by what my vet said and he is not frighteningly thin or anything. My two horses are near perfect weights in my opinion and our Shettie also looks pretty good (or so I think). I am just really upset now as I feel as though people think I am abusing and starving my ponies. :(

It sounds to me like you're doing exactly the right thing. You know your horses better than anyone else, especially someone who isn't horsey. If your vet is happy that you're doing the right thing by your old lad then I really wouldn't worry.

your pony is better kept a bit lean for both the laminitis and his joints. Ignore them about being cruel, you would be cruel letting them into the big field and ending up hardly being able to walk for the pain in his feet and possibly being pts with it. If your vet is happy with them then surely that is a more valid opinion than that of two people who know nothing. Oh and do they know how much work is involved in strip grazing, all the poo picking and lugging hay around. It's not like you are doing it to make life easier for you.
Kepp doing what you're doing and hopefully you will escape the summer laminitis free.

Just tell your brother that you are following the vet's advice re the weight and since when did he know more than the vet? Then remind him how he doesn't change and bring up some horrid incident from his teens when he was a know it all and came unstuck (am sure there will be one)

(ps Can you tell I've got two brothers? )

(((((((((hugs)))))))) you are following your vets advice. This is the best thing you can do. Try to ignor your brother or try to get him to be around when the vet is there then he can hear from the vet that you are doing the right thing. Lami is a horrible illness and having seen how Lucy was with it when she had her bad attack i think you are deff doing the right thing keeping the horse a little lean.
You just keep your chin up and keep doing what is right by your horses and just have a moan to us if you need to ;) :D :D :D We're always here to listen. :)

Hehe, I have another brother two... it's unfortunate, isn't it? :P

And thanks Laura :) I shall stick to my guns then and carry on!
