My YO is likely to limit the hay I can buy as there won't be enough for her animals and mine. I used to buy small bale haylage locally, but I have heard that the farmer has run out of small bales and is rebaling his big bales into small bales. My friends horses won;t eat it apparently. I am concerned that re baling haylage would be detrimental to the quality - ie it has been exposed to the air then baled again.

Any ideas? I can always buy one bale to try.

Many commercial suppliers of small bale hay produce it in exactly that way! My former haylage supplier baled all his haylage in HUGE bales during the summer - and then re-baled it from October onwards. (I used to get the big 'reject' bales - anything with even the teensiest hint of mould on a corner was 'discarded' from small baling.

Provided the haylage was well made and stored - and then re-baled quickly - there is no reason there should be a problem. Get a bale or two and try it!

Hmmm, I dont get that, haylage's keeping qualities are dependent on air being excluded. Rebaling it, however quickly, would surely not be good for it?

But I guess if you try several and they are all OK it is worth getting, but I would def do it on the strict basis that you can return any or all if you find problems.

if when the haylage was first bailed it had Ecobale additive put on it before wrapped, it will be safe to open, rebale then re wrap.
This is how the likes of horsehage is made, where they big bale, store, then rebale and wrap as needed :o)

I guess it would be ok then, tho watch out with the additives, two separate batches of horsehage I had a year or two back smelt so strongly of nail polish type chemical smell they made you gag and were sent straight back, apparently that was the additive, think they tripped when they tipped it in! But I do use Horsehage regularly still and has been fine since then so am reassured this OP will prob be ok, but would still recommend she is def ok to return if she has any probs.

Thats what Philorth Haylage does here - buys in big bale for sweeties and then re-bales. Not sure about additives though. What you will notice is the rebaled stuff goes off much quicker.
