My oldie has been suffering from mud fever brought on by a waterworks problem which is basically here to stay and means that his legs are wet a lot of the time - though I have been applying barrier creams etc to waterproof him and padding him up overnight to waterproof etc.

I am praying now that we have the mud fever on the hop but the result is that his skin is terribly pink and fragile and I'm wondering if there is anything I can give him in his feed or apply to the skin to help make it a bit more robust. It is very pink indeed.

Also in NL

I would use Keretex mud fever powder first and then put a barrier cream over the top. I would suspect that the cream will just keep the new skin soft - you need to get it a bit drier and thus harder. I've used the Keratex for all sorts of minor skin problems as well as being the best thing I've ever used for mudfever, and it sorts things out very nicely. If you are willing to try homeopathy, use graphites at 30c two or three times a day for a week.

No harm in trying! I think the Keratex contains a waterproofing agent as well. Lift the hair, puff it in liberally so that it can get to the skin (it seems to waste a lot but I only use a single tub each winter) then lay the hair flat with your hand and give it another good puff over the top. I think there are other makes which are similar and probably a bit cheaper. I wonder if as urine is acid and burns the skin, a gentle paste of bicarbonate of soda might help too. At least the current warm sunny weather helps to dry the skin quickly but watch out for sunburn.

Hi again, I sent a message to a US website to see if they do things differently over there and the vet there suggested nappy rash cream. I'd go for cheap and cheerful zinc and castor oil. Zinc is brilliant for skin problems anyway.

Thanks again FP - so kind of you!! I actually did another post in NL the other day and a large number of responses said nappy rash cream - either sudocreme or zinc and castor! Just like you/the US vet! Thanks so much though, it just confirms it again which is great! I started on sudocreme two day ago and it has helped already, so I will keep using it until I finish the giant pot and then probably move over to Z&C for economie's sake!
