Recall - another short word

YAAAAAYYYYYY!!!!!!!

Today was the first time we tried the long line on our lunchtime walk and it worked!

I held onto it at first then just dropped it and let it run along the ground behind him. I did lose him when a rabbit jumped up right in front of him (stoopid bunny

) and the end of the line whipped past me before I could jump on it but fortunately he didn't go far as the rabbit ducked into a hole under the hedge, and I was able to do a high speed hobble to the end of the line and coax him back with the whistle and treats.

Shortly after that he lunged at some horsepoo just inside one of the paddocks, but I was prepared and jumped on the line at the same time as shrieking 'NO!' in a voice that even Cayla would be proud of, which stopped him dead

He looked rather shocked at this the first time, and tried it on again a few times but soon realised he had no chance and just pootled along ahead of me, sniffing the smells and staying out of the fields

We did some recall practice with the whistle as well, and he was spot on, I didn't have to touch the line at all as he came straight back every time

Am just waiting for my posh pink whistle to arrive and we will be fully equipped!

Yay! So glad it is working!

You do feel a bit bad when you see the first 'what the HELL was that?' look on their face, but glad Henry is taking to it so well with not too much line stomping at all - well done to you both

and hopefully you can ditch the line sooner than you thought.

To be honest after all the public humilation that dog has put me through (climbing through the fence in front of the Head of UK Welfare FFS

) I actually felt a little sneaking sense of satisfaction

After all, I KNOW he knows what he is supposed to do when the whistle goes, he was just being a sod and choosing to ignore it!

I'm glad i've finally found someone else .. everyone takes the mick outa me for my pink whistle, that is of course, until i remind them it's in aid of breast cancer care. Got it here

I think it comes with a lanyard, not sure if it will be pink... the lanyard will have to be next on the purchasing list

I lose my whistles far too often, so buy them as cheaply as possible! I said to my Mum perhaps I should buy the solid silver one, it costs so much I might not lose it!
Or perhaps I should get a pink one, it would be easier to find if I drop it

Fab news Han!
When we used to walk Otto on his long line he would try to cross the ditch, despite being told not to, get halfway over and find himself soring backwards as the long line reached it's full length.
I always felt sorry for him, but it he would keep trying so obviously didn't have that much of an impact on him at the time.
Now however when I tell him No, he stops, so maybe it just took a while to perculate through, Springer brain and all that

I hope he gets it soon, but we shall have to see, at least the long line was not expensive so I can replace it as many times as needed until he gets it

When I say NO Henry has started coming back to me, so I may be inadvertantly training him to recall, but hey, never mind....

Because when we first started teaching the recall to Otto we didn't call him, just stopped and waited for him to work out he couldn't go any further until he came back, he now comes back and waits with us if we stand still. It's not something we intended to stick, but it's actually quite useful

Henry is similar, he runs ahead but then he stops and turns back to check on me. If I keep walking he keeps going but if I stop he runs back to me for big praises and a treat

It is very handy!

It's so frustrating because his recall is not dreadful - just sporadic

And rubbish in the face of horsepoo
