Recall Help please??

Hey. I was wondering if i could pick your brains. I have got a choc lab (male) who has just turned year old. He is really well behaved, his sit, stay, down, etc is really good but his recall is pants.

He gets walked twice a day, and when I take him up to the field and let him have a run, he will come back to call only 50% of the time. If there is another person or dog in the field they are much more interesting than me. He only wants to play, not got a nasty bone in his body, but i dont know what to do, to get it 100%.

Also if we open the front door, without making him sit before we open it, he sometimes tries to do a runner, and if he gets out then he wont come back to call.

Any suggestions??

I gave in and got an electric collar for my dalmatian as he becomes selctively deaf at times. Now all I have to do is make the collar give a warning beep if he doesn't respond and I have instant obedience!
 
Can you carry treats? If so, take a few and when you recall him (and he comes back) then reward him with a treat. Don't scold him when he doesn't come back - as he will probably associate coming back with a reprimand
Does he have a favourite toy? If so take it with you and make coming back to you the most 100% brilliant thing he's ever seen!
My old lab had selective hearing, I think on occasiion they are such busy minded dogs they zone out from owners! LOL

Hi. Yeah i carry treats with my wherever I go. We take footballs and toys to make us more fun than other people, but we just dont seem to be hehe. We are going to right back to basics i think, and see how he comes on. He is very intelligent and picks up on what we are doing very quickly. Thankyou for all your help.x
 
You could keep him on a long line until you know that it is perfect. Also practice in the house or garden just when he is playing or pottering around, say 'his name come' really firmly but also in a fun way(if thats possible) and when he comes to you praise him like he has just saved your life, overload him with fuss and treats and play. As he gets better at it you can stop going overboard and just give him a good boy and a pat. When your at the field run away while you call him and he should follow you, and then you can praise him.

Try a long extendable lead. Cary treats with you. (and a clicker if you clicker train) Let him wander on the long lead and then call him back to you, treating him as soon as he does. Use the same word each time, such as 'come' and don't over use his name or the comand or else he will tune you out.

When I walk Rhu off the lead it's with my other dog who comes to call so when she naturally returns to me, I will call his name and he'll follow.

Labs can be quite food orientated, so you should find a long lead with treats will work.

Try using some training aids...along side the treats..i.e a clicker or a whistle....only treat him when u are doing these exercises....so he assosiates them with the training and use something he would normally never get i.e chicken or small chunks of cheese...PM me if u need any guidance on the use of the clicker or whistle as it saves me blathering on in every post..lol

I know this sounds daft but, I have a JR Terrier who also dose this, when other people or dogs are about because they are just so much more fun! Any way I have now worked out that if I run the other way, all of a sudden, im more exiting! so he comes bounding back, works every time! the food is good but only if other people & dogs are not around! ( I think im a bit slimmer than I used to be to)
