My youngster who is recently backed has started tossing his head when ridden. Ive had saddle checked and his teeth have been done and had him checked over by two different physio/chiros this week alone. He is ridden in a cyprium lozenge bit, ive tried a myler comfort snaffle and a plain single jointed eggbutt snaffle as well. His bridle has a comfort headpiece, ive ridden with and without the noseband.

He is perfectly fine in walk, he starts it in trot basically swinging his head up and down. If i tell him off and push him on he stops for a while then starts again. He doesn't do much it in canter either. Trot seems to be the biggest problem. Im sure he is just taking the pee. When he behaves he has lovely self carriage and big loose paces.

Any ideas how i can stop him from throwing his head about? Ive been told to try a standing martingale or an elastic bungee aid.

Is it a lack of balance? Perhaps he finds walk and canter easier to balance in, but struggles in trot? Big, loose paces could actually be difficult for a freshly backed, therefore poorly muscled, horse to deal with, with the added weight of a rider. Try using a light forward seat instead of rising?

What is he like being lunged in trot? With and without side-reins?

When being lunged he is fine holds his head steady with and without side reins. He is very well balanced and the arena is huge so no tight corners. Ive tried both half seat and sitting down. Long reins, short reins. Holding them wide etc... When he is behind another horse he doesn't do it. Out on a hack he doesn't do it.

Might just be a bit of a phase, mine suddenly developed a really severe head toss in canter. Did all the usual checks and everything was fine so had a lesson with my instructor who told me how to ride it and just worked her through it over 3/4 schooling sessions. Went away as quickly as it appeared, sometimes youngsters are a bit random because they are finding their way.
