Hi Guys

nearly two weeks ago my horse was shod (will be two weeks on thurs) - my horse never stands perfectly still for the farrier - but anyway the farrier ended up putting in a nail too high resulting in my horse becoming lame - i had the vet out to sedate him and the farrier to re do the shoe (as he had got so stressed out he wouldn't let anyone near his feet) anyway the farrier and vet confirmed that the nail was the problem and nothing else - the farrier re did the shoe and i was told by the vet to give him a week off work - potentially two weeks - as these things can stay sore for awhile - after a week he was looking much better - no heat in his foot nothing but was still a little hobbly - so i decided to give him another week off just to be sure....

anyway he's not been on box rest for this although usually the vet said it would be better - the reason for this is he's been in recovery for suspensory ligament damage and has been on box rest all summer - but i had been building him up and he could now go out in a smallish paddock during the day and the vet said it was more important to take care of this injury - as if i kept him in he'd go charging around like a loon once he went back out potentially risking damage to his ligaments

anyway - i work from 8.30am until 5pm and I am up the yard at 6.30am and can't physically get to the yard until 5.30pm in the evening - anyway at our yard people start bringing their horses in at about 4pm - every time someone walks over to get their horse in my horse gets a bit giddy and charges about - only because he thinks it's me coming to get him

i should explain in my horse's field is my horse and 1 other - who is brought in about 1pm (he is also recovering) there are other horses that he can see and touch over the fencing - and this horse going in does not bother him - however this field is also an access to other fields so i think what the issue is- is everytime someone walks through he comes and says hello (he's a friendly chap) - when someone brings a horse in he follows - doesn't harrass them (i've watched him) - but everytime someone comes to the gate he'll think it's me (it's dark) and comes charging to the gate when he realises it's not me he prob ambles around

anyway he's now gone hoppy again - from the charging around - so i've put him out today and my OH is bringing him in at lunch time (he works just up the road) - again there is no heat - so i'm just a bit worried

Think may be worth getting the vet back out, blocking the foot to check that he is hopping cause of the foot and not the ligament injury?

hard to know if he has bruised the foot or pinged the ligament again, you would need to check with your vet, but only turning out in the mornings sounds like the way forward for the time being

sorry - the ligament problem is on his hind legs

the foot in question is a front one - and the vet checked for tendon and other injuries - it's definately the shoe

I'd be getting a new farrier to be honest. Ive had one pony who did everything except turn himself inside out (he even threw himself onto his side) when the farrier tried to shoe him and not one nail went to high! Granted we only got front shoes on and called it a day.
