Recipe for fly deterrent anyone?

I'm riding my friends cob while she's away and today the flys were really annoying him. Tacking him up was somewhat challenging as he was getting very cranky and then wanted to take his ill humour out on me. I wondered if anyone has a good recipe for fly deterrent? Does garlic work?
