Any reconmendations?

You won't get a quality professional portrait for £40, think of the cost of materials, studio, and artists time....

If you engage a professional you will need to pay a professional rate, if not then you run the risk that the product is not of professional standard either!

.. also an HHO member... amazing work and you can get a great picture in your budget.

I'd be very surprised if she is able to make a profit on those rates. Although I know she lives abroad so this may make a difference.

My husband is a full time professional artist. It is his only source of income, so I do know what I am talking about. If you need to actually make a living from your work you have to work out your prices properly.

As a guide he has to allow for all the following expenses:
His own time
His studio
Heating and lighting his studio
Website hosting
Maintaining his website
Advertising and marketing
Telephone and internet costs
Tax! Very important and one I would be concerned about with very cheap pictures (not making any accusations about PF)
Materials, paper, paints pencils, frames, mounts etc
Banking charges (business bank accounts charge fees even in credit)
Insurance
Professional Memberships

To make a profit on a £40 picture you would have to be doing several a day every day. Some artists may have a style that allows that, but often to get a good likeness a lot of work goes into them.

Commissioning an artist is very like engaging any other professional or tradesperson and to a large extent you get what you pay for.

Of course sometimes people are not making a living from being a professional artist and just do it for pocket money because they enjoy it, but that is a different matter.......

A quick look at professional equestrian artists will show that most prices will be well in excess of £100.
