What bit would be suitable for a 14.2 cob type pony who leans on the bit and grabs the bit between his teeth as an evasion? I have been advised by an instructor to change his bit. He is currently in an eggbutt french link snaffle.

How does he do in a standard broken snaffle? I've had a few horses HATE French links - the vast majority don't seem to mind much either way but the few that do mind a lot. What does your instructor recommend?

If you want to splash out you could also try one of the Myler mouthpieces, or a Mikmar, or a combination bit. Sometimes these can be very helpful tools for reschooling, in part because they are so specific in their actions and built to accomodate different mouth conformations. They can be just the ticket for some horses without increasing severity.

All that said, I'm a standard snaffle fa, albeit within the wide range of options for individual fit.

Why complicate matters and spend money if you don't have to.

my instructor told me to ask YO so I will do when I next see her. I've heard of the copper bits, are they the ones with bits of copper in which twist and roll around in the mouth?

my leaner was in a loose ring snaffle and went to a french link, her leaning has lessened. an eggbutt makes it more stable in a horses mouth so they find them easier to grasp. so i recomend a loosering with a copper or sweet iron insert as these make them play with the bit more instad of resisting!

A straight bit would be harder for him to get his tongue under and grab the bit......

My boy hated the french link - too fussy for his mouth.....
