My boy will be living out in all weathers this autumn and I'm looking to buy him a light or medium-light turnout rug but dont know which one to trust.

I was looking at the Fal 40g Cheiftan/Bulldog rugs but keep reading that Fals arent what they used to be and that a few people are disappointed with them these days. I'd go for a Rambo Supreme in a flash but cannot afford £150+ so those are out of the running. Lots seem to like the PE rugs and I wondered what the light/medium versions were like for waterproofedness (sp?!) Or if anyone can recommend any other make instead? Many thanks.

I think the Bulldog ones are okay as I'm fairly sure they were still made in the UK. The Chieftains are made abroad and are highly inferior to the original FAL range. Crying shame as they have decimated a fabulous brand of quality rugs but there you are.

I've got lots of FAL Viking rugs and they are waterproof even after several years use. However they are almost impossible to get hold of now as all of us with them tend to hang on to them.

Whichever rug I get I always spray it with nikwax waterproofer (or similar) which you can get at places like Black's and Millets. The spray I got most recently also has a uv filter which helps to prevent the fabric rotting. I also try not to wash wash turnout rugs too often, cleaning them by stiff brushing when dry.

The last 2 lightweight premier equine rugs I have bought have been useless within a season. They seem to be ok to start with until you find a sodden cold horse in a few months time. I have just bought 2 for 1 in the derby house sale so hopefully they will work out better.

Fals are great but not like they used to be. The cheaper ones are about 600 denier so if your horse or other horses are rough on your rugs I wouldnt bother. They are also warm despite being 40g. Id buy a Rambo original. I got mine cheap of Hope Valley I think, Cybercheckout sometimes have great Rambo deals too.

I like my weatherbeeta rugs. I've never had a problem with them leaking and they fit well. I also like amigo rugs.
