As the title really.

Looks like I'm going to have to buy a new saddle for Thumper - which is a bore, but hey ho.

I'm interested to hear people's opinions on saddles for TB types, so if anyone has anything can you let me know your views??

thanks

Wow saddle - id never buy my horses anything else now.

Really? Aren't they hideously expensive??

I think the Wow club saddle is around £800 - but then if you keep it nice you would never need another saddle as you can change the headplates for any horse (so if you get a new horse you dont need a new saddle!) and the air is easily adjusted - altho i always get my fitter to do mine, i wouldnt do it myself incase i deflated it or something

It depends how much you want to spend really - what sort of saddle do you want aswell?

Have heard SO many complaints about the Wows, people either love them, or have serious amounts of problems with them. Yes they are expensive.

Both Ideal and Barnsby are fantastic saddles that can be pretty much made to your spec. They are wool flocked too which makes them adjustable. The guy that comes out from barnsby direct is great, and very good at attention to detail!!

Nope - simply can't afford that sort of money.

I'm looking at spending £900 tops. And even that is pushing it.

I had an Albion as my last one but wouldn't touch the new ones with a bargepole - the leather is horrible! But it was so comfy and I loved it! But I know have a wow - and wow indeed! Well worth the extra cash and you never need to buy another saddle again!

to be honest the best saddle that fitted my high wither mare was a thorowgood TB saddle. it was fab as you can change the fish for their everchanging shape lol

you can get a Wow club saddle for £1000 ish - well worth the money imo. You dont get problems with flocking going lumpy or anything, brilliant saddles.

V wore a GFS Pro event /BC Vinici
D (chunkier tb) wore a GFS GP or a bates Caprilli
L TBx wore a Bates Caprilli
S has a Wintec CC and I hate it

Bates Caprilli is what I have - I love it - but it really isn't a good fit on Thumper. His wither is simply too big. It's been adjusted for him a few times, but I'm throwing the towel in on it.

My saddler really wants me to have a saddle to TB panels - and before I ring him for him to come out would just like to get some ideas of what I want to look at.

Huw fitted the Pro Event to V 3 years ago and he has a huge wither and he thought that was the best fit .
I love the bates caprilli , is thumper a tb or tb cross ? I really want to buy one for Sol but I think even with the interchangable gullets its not going to have a great fit

When L had his bates changed I was told to use a sheepskin / polypad under his saddle because it was simply not a good enough fit even with the correct gullet

Thumper is 3/4 TB.

It is a better fit with a sheepskin underneath. But it's rubbing him, so he out in the field for a month now.

Really p'eed off - but that's life.

I have an Albion on my TB. My saddler said they fit specific horses very well, but they are quite a specific fit. My boy has ok withers, but huge shoulders and very flat sides. The saddle was a wide gusset which suits the TB shape apparently.

The leather on my Albion is beautiful, I must say. Apart from a few rough patches on the underside of the saddle flap which seem to be fading with use.

I had the most lovely, well made and well priced saddle for my TB a few years back.

Made by Mike Norton of Browns Saddlers in Oxford, his own brand - Omega

Had full gusset and drop panels with a really good bearing surface, made specifically for TB types

Might be worth calling and seeing if they could fit yours from a template and then let your saddler make the final adjustments

Cliff barnsby saddles are good for high wither types. My tb has one and I have never had a problem with it.Six of us all have same /similiar barnsbys on our yard and not one of has had a problem with fitting or needed alterations afterwards.£800 for gp if thats any help

I use Albions on my TBs and they fit nicely with enough room above the withers. They are expensive new though. I hear good things about the new Stubbens, they are supposed to be generous at the wither (and not as hard on the rider's posterior as they used to be!).

What discipline are you wanting the saddle for? Without knowing if you are after a dressage, GP, close contact, event etc it is difficult to help.

Ok i'll go against everyone and say saddle company !

Top of the range is £600 ish, and they are adjustable, and they are the only saddle that will fit Scoopy 100%, you would have enough change for the saddle company dressage one too.

Saddle company saddle can be picked up for £200 on e bay !

I love my Saddle Company one

I currently have an Ideal Jessica on my TB. Wanted another Albion but budget wouldn't stretch and couldn't find a saddler who would fit them who I trusted in my area. I used to jump him in an Albion K2 and rode my other TB eventer in an Albion selector I think it was (the one with the changeable pads).

100% agree with you Scoopy!

I have the saddle co. GP for my very high withered, dipped backed TB - fits him a treat & is THE most comfortable saddle I've ever sat on!

My mare is 100% thoroughbred and has withers that could castrate!! She has a narrow Ideal International Event, no drop panels or cut back head and it fits her perfectly!! She is not shy of telling me when a saddle hurts and this one doesn't, even though I have seen one website declare Ideals not suitable for narrow high withered horses.

If he is highwithered then you need something with a curved tree. Each model even within a brand have differant shaped trees, some Albions are flatter than others for example. Be sure you are fitting the saddle far enough back, as I have seen so many people sitting on the shoulders of their horse and complain about muscle wastage behind the wither. Unless your horse has a serious problem a drop panel fills that space and the muscle won't come back. If you are not sure then speak to Barnsby Direct they were really helpful to me even though I didn't buy anything, just tell them your price range, what you need and they will tell you if they have something suitable. A brilliant idea.

It is a total mine field and every horse is differant, you can only test what suits your horse. Good Luck I hope it isan't too long a road!
