I need to get a saddle Tia. Not too expensive, ideally synthetic.

She is a Welsh A, flat backed and rather rotund. If daughter does not rider her I am going to look for a teeny tiny adult/older teen to ride her so suggestions on what length a Welshy could accommodate.

This post is only for ideas on where I can start and I will of course ensure when I get a saddle it fits properly.

Thank you xx

I use a Thorowgood Griffin pony club model on a flat backed section A - extra wide does the trick and it is really comfortable for the pony and rider and lightweight. I am not sure whether they make this model any more but they are on ebay occasionally and seem to be popular. I have also used a Maxam but it was very hard on the bottom and the children did not like it at all!

As above- We have both extra wide and extra extra wide for our section A

I have a maxam one xx wide which came with one of the shetties. I can't stand it as it tips up and 'perches' on the back. Children kept falling off pony when jumping and I realised it was the saddle catapulting them

even though it fitted seemingly well. Not good at all IMO. I'm saving for one of the half panel leather saddles at the moment. I also have a suede saddle 'pad' which is THE best thing for round ponies and small children. It cost about £15 second hand and works well for everything from showing to jumping.

I had a small Griffin one once (for a sec A) and it was fab, but like the maxam tended to tip when doing jumping etc.

Native saddle co do a great one for small round ponies, but pricey, if I were you I'd go with a saddle pad to begin with as both child and adult can use it.

Ive got two of the Thorowgood Griffin pony club saddles - one with the shorter side flaps (good for little short kiddy legs) and an normal one. Mine are going on ebay soon as no need for them any longer, but I don't think they are particularly good when the rider gets heavier (small adult for example) as from experience they tend to spread slightly. Mine are (I think) a 15" which was for an 11.1hh welsh, and a 16" for a 12.1hh Welsh, finely built but seemingly long backed mare - and at this point my daughter was a 8-9 and a bit leggy.
