As title, we are looking at changing our car this year and due to aged relatives visiting etc we are going to need a 7 seater vehicle.

We are also going to be buying a trailer so need something with a bit of pulling power. Space in the back for the dogs when the car is being used as a 5 seater is also needed.

Help!

We used to have a 7seater Pajero and it was a proper work horse, sadly it was costing us too much so it had to go. We now have a Discovery 3, 7 seater and I love it, tows an Ifor 510 with no problem at all:)

Do you have a B or B+E licence?

Think it's a B+E without looking. I passed my test in 1992.

I'm not keen on the Disco's, but used to have a 7 seat Maverick, so will possibly go down the Maverick route again if it will do everything I need it to do. I did like my old tank :)

Keep the suggestions coming though, I will have a good look at them all.

I had a Mitsubishi Pajero LWB, which I absolutely loved, total workhorse. I drove it into the ground then gave it to my sister.

I now have a Mercedes M Class, it is smaller and more car like, but has 2 fold down seats in the back. They wouldn't do for long journeys but are OK for ferrying extra kids short distances. The Paj definately had a bigger boot.

Nissan Pathfinder. Brilliant car. We looked at the discovery also which we liked the best however we got the same spec for 4K less and the fuel economy we get about 38-40mpg. It is the same width of a car so easy to drive and even has a reversing camera!!

If you can afford the discovery though, all being equal I would opt for that nevertheless as it has so many gadgets etc!!

We are very pleased with our pathfinder and have had it 3 years and is a true workhorse.

MItsubishi shogun- amazing pulling power never gets stuck in mud and a reasonably good looking car pulls ifor 510 no problems

We have a "Chevrolet Captiva" only issue is the steering lock is pathetic, with a capital *P* not sure how it is on the 2011 models :D
The Discovery's are also fabulous! :D:D

(I can speak though- I don't have a full driving licencee yet *sigh* )

Mitsubishi Delica
I have had 2 and they are without doubt the best 7/8 seater with all the power of the shogun

Despite being a landrover household I secretly miss our Delica she went through everything thrown at her, towed what ever we asked and never failed us. And the space she had inside was amazing. You could take all the relatives, and tack, grooming kit and spare tack to a show and tow the horse ;)

I own a 7 Seater shogun - absolutely the bees knees.:D.Will carry anything, will pull anything & are like hens teeth to buy a good used one but well worth the hunt.It took me 6 months to find mine & owned it two years.:)

Another 7 seater shogun owner here! Chuffed to bits with it; she's our baby. Tows impeccably, the super select gearbox is really something, and fits all of us plus clobber and tows a 510 perfectly well!

TWO WORDS

NISSAN TERRANO i love mine

my comments in red
What's Good

Unbreakable, simple, old-fashioned 4x4 with high/low range, etc.

Vastly improved in July 1996, especially 2.7 litre diesel which gained intercooler and 25 more bhp. (This is the same engine as most contemporary London taxis.)

Two wheelbases. 5-door LWB versions can have 7 seats.

Carried on when Ford pulled the plug on the Maverick.

What's Bad

Tall and narrow, so you have to be careful on corners and better not pile stuff on the roof.
i have found no probs on corners

Jerky on-road ride - partly due to suspension, partly to driveline.
personally i have not found this

Spanish build quality not 100% up to the mark, especially trim items.
again i not worried about this

3.0DI SVE auto wasn't cheap at £25,295.

Low 3 out of 9 point death rate from accidents in this model.

Came 3rd = from bottom in 2005 JD Power/What Car Survey of 23,000 cars reg Sep 2002 to Aug 2003 with satisfaction score of 71.2%.
What to Watch Out For

Quite likely to have been off-roaded, especially if registered in a country area.

Farmers cars will have seen some work, though remember farmers drive to preserve their vehicles - it's the off-road enthusiasts who break them.

Look for weeping seals, noisy hubs, clonky driveshafts, driveshaft 'lash', noisy gearbox or transfer case, oil leaks from engine and drive-train.

Smoke from diesel may indicate that turbo oil seals have failed.

Mass airflow sensor failures common, causing the engine to fade to 'tick over'.
Recalls

not found this yet

1995 (with Michelin 215/80 R15 tyres: VIN 200000 to 242699): tyres may lose pressure. 29-1-2002: VINS 475199 to 493474 recalled because of possible interferance between steering column and pipe supplying pressurised fluid to rear brakes.

Option of 3.0 litre engine, itself with auto option from early 2002.

2002 SWB prices from £17,395 for 2.7 SWB and from £19,995 for 7 seater LWB.

Nissans generally had slightly below average warranty repair costs in 2003 Warranty Direct Reliability index (index 94.77 v/s lowest 31.93). Link:- www.reliabilityindex.co.uk

Isuzu trooper every time! Ours is a real work horse, never ever let us down!! And space big enough for 3 dogs in back! When going to land rover sales rep, they actually said to us the best thing for what we want (towing horseys) is the Isuzu! For a sales rep to say that, it's something!!
