Need a bit of help please from the lovely HHOers.

Bringing my pony back into work and he is fabulous to hack. Not strong, can hold him easily in a snaffle when the crazy livery bombs off with no prior warning  but to school he is very strong.

I am about to start reschooling from scratch but need a change of head gear I think.

Currently he has a 3 ring gag. This came with him when I bought him and as he was turned away over winter I never got round to replacing it. He hacks in an eggbutt snaffle that I am trying from a friend with no problems, but the gag isnt working for schooling (nor is the snaffle)

He just wants to rush around all the time (which I know is a schooling issue that I am about to start work on with an instructor) but having the right bit will obviously help. He is a Haffy so when he wants to be he is very strong. He takes hold of the bit, sets his neck and trots as fast as his little legs will carry him! He also doesn't currently wear a nose band as although he is only 13.1hh, his cob sized nose band is too small. Would a nose band help? If so, any suggestions?

He does eventually relax and gives me some nice work, but can anyone recommend something better for schooling?

I'll be using the bit bank to try first so any suggestions appreciated.

Thanks all x

It's very difficult to suggest things without seeing what he does, but from what you have said I would try a waterford first, with the HUGE caveat that they are NOT for schooling normally. Because of their multiple links the horse can't lean on them, so you get a very inconsistent contact... which might be just what he needs to teach him that he can't get hold of the bit and tank around with you! So, waterford until he realises he mustn't lean, and then either a snaffle with a lozenge or a truly symmetrical single-joint. (hold it up by the joint to see if the sides are symmetrical or not, most aren't)
loads of half-halts, voice aids, etc should help too!

You mean you don't enjoy the Haflingers special of schooling like a mini motorbike in the Wall of Death at the fair ? :-DDD been there!! Don't have massive suggestions as I bought my girl for hacking/ endurance so the fast trotting is a positive!

Sounds like the neue Schule verbindend universal could be ideal. There are 4 different options for the reins with or without a curb strap do for your hacking you could simply put them on the main ring which is almost like a snaffle then for schooling change them according to your needs. You can hire and try before you buy (think the bit bank do this too). Here is s link to a you tube about it: http://m.youtube.com/#/watch?v=8Ce8UiPLXao&desktop_uri=/watch?v=8Ce8UiPLXao

Ha ha ha! Its frustrating as once he does eventually relax, he goes beautifully! He hacks like a dream! Can ride the whole time on the buckle, but to school he is a tank!

I will have a look into what has been suggested. I appreciate its hard to say without seeing him so any replies I am grateful for x.
