I have a lovely Welsh section D, typical mouth set up, fleshy, thick tongue etc.

Came with jointed baucher snaffle, wasn't happy, changed to french link baucher as my bit box isn't v. adventurous! Happier but still not working nicely.

Then changed to a jointed cartwheel bit, better but not quite there.

Friend then raided her box and found me a soft rubber mullen mouth pelham, which he started off lovely in but has become increasingly strong and now pulls against it.

I'm not happy with the pelham as it's unnecessary, he was never a problem brake-wise in a snaffle so I want to go back this way.

Looking at loose ring snaffles with either a french line/lozenge, but don't know what metals/type of losenge to go for! He can be a bit leany.

Budget not great either so as fab as NS etc are, it won't be happening!

(Can nip to DH in about an hour so would be amazing! to have some replies asap!)
 
I don't think i'm experienced enough to give you a good idea, but mines being mouthed atm in a D ring cherry roller snaffle. He loves it. He's never resisted it...didn't like the straight bar bit my friend tried on him. i think the copper rollers keep him amused so he doesn't think about much else. A diff friend of mine swears by loose ring snaffles (all of her ponies have been broken witht hem and have lovely soft mouths!)

See this is the problem, I'm hopeless when it comes to bitting, there's just too many!

As far as I'm aware loose ring is good for leaners, and links good for fleshy mouths, but then it's the type of links, and the rollers, and the materials.

Baffled.
 
Sounds like he doesn't have too much space in his mouth - for that reason I would discount any single joint or unjointed bit as it would unlikely that they would be shaped just right to fit comfortably in his mouth - particularly taking into account room for his tongue. Esp as you say brakes aren't a prob, more a problem to find something comfortable for him I would go for a loose ring french link, but one shaped to allow him space to swallow comfortably - I think then he would settle nicely. I am a massive fan on the cotswold sport tongue saver bits (my mare doesn't have a particularly large tongue at all, but she is v sensitive in her tongue so these are just brilliant!). http://cotswoldsport.co.uk/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&products_id=467
 
I like the look of that one, would give him plenty of room.

Think I'll put him back into his hanging cheek tonight, unless I can find a loose ring on the yard to borrow and order that, unless anyone has anymore suggestions?
 
I have a horse that really does not like loose ring snaffles of any description, but he is much better in a happy mouth 3 ring on the 2nd ring! he loves it! he also likes the sweet iron tom thumb as well. For dressage at Novice he has been wearing a french link hanging cheek which he goes fine in as well and at Ele this summer he'll be in a double!

There are also the KY rotary bits which give plenty of room- maybe worth a look?

Also the more you can get them active behind and using the hind leg the less that they can lean on you.
