I am looking into possibly putting my TB on a calmer for the next month and possibly continuing into the new year as he has become rather stressed by the fireworks. I have heard quite a few good things about the 'horse first' products can anyone tell me how much a tub of their 'relax me' costs or recommend me another calmer that won't cripple my bank balance.
Thanks

A cheap calmer is something called Cal-Mag. Its what they feed cows but is calcium and magnesium based and works very well a 15kg sack is only £6 ask for it at an agricultural feed merchants.

Global Herbs do a thoroughbred calmer that is magnesium free. Aparantly a lot of 'hot' horses ie thoroughbreds and arabs are intolerant to magnesium and mag based calmers can actually make them worse!!!! This was told to me by the rep for Global herbs. I have not tried it myself but a client of mine said it made the difference in her keeping her thoroughbred or rehoming him.

is not moli chop not highly molassed? If it is it will not be very calming.

Are you getting confused with spillers cool fibre eventing09?

I have found magic worked a treat on my box rest 3/4 tb however as I understand it magnesium calmers will only work if the horse is magnesium deficient which if they have been stressed is quite likely.

He is very laid back but if something does manage to spook him then he gets very stressed.
So he may have a be lacking magnesium when he is stressed but this isn't very often so would he benefit from a magnesium based one if he may not be deficient apart from every once in a while?
Tiger2 - thanks a lot.

We're using Betamag for our mare whose on extended period of box rest (6 months!) due to broken knee. It seems to be keeping the edge off her, but don't know if anyone else has experience of this. We're getting it from the vet.
