Recommend me a good book ..

... For tips on bringing on a young horse. It's something I'm planning to do soon and I want to do some background reading.

The horse will already have been backed and turned away and will be being brought back into work by the time I take him on.

Any of Richard Maxwell books or Kelly Marks or Heather Moffatt ( if you can find one of her's ) . I depends on what you want to read up on ... ridden , ground work ? Above are both really good .

really old but really good "breaking and riding" by james fillis ... or you can get the revised one by Geoffrey brooke.

very old school but it is fab!!! some of it make me laugh everytime i read it, its like he is in the room talking to you (some very witty commentary) but every horse i have brought on or broken i have used this book as a reference or guide with great results.


he was a well-known English-born French riding master. He attended the school of Francois Baucher in France, and introduced his methods to his home country. He taught for 12 years as Ecuyer en chef of the St. Petersburg Cavalry Riding School. He then went on to train in a German circus in 1892, during which time he performed for the Grand Duke Nicholas in Russia, and was subsequently offered a position to train the Russian Cavalry to which he accepted. and worked alongside horses for over 60 years and was considered a true horse man, never nasty or aggressive and belived in doing things properly (respect the horse the horse will respect you) cnt recommend highly enough.... although it is a very old book (the revised one is 1947 so a bit more recent and just as good) think the reviised one is from £10 -£25 depending on where you look fo it, but well worth reading xxx
