OK, so perhaps the wrong time of year for many, but Fat Lad is fat and moving to a 10 acre field soon. He is going to be sharing with one other horse, and there is plentiful grass, which at least saves money not having to buy in hay for a good while yet!

Which is the best muzzle for an overweight Highland, regarding fit and performance?

My Highland wears a Greenguard muzzle, the new style one (big basket- looking one) with sheepskin stitched into it as it rubs her chin when she wears it overnight, but that's probably due to excessive eating not any fault in the fit of the muzzle! It works well for us although she did sulk for twenty minutes when it first went on but then she was hungry so got on with it. :)

The first muzzle I tried was the Shires and my mare got that off easily. I then splashed out and bought the Greenguard grazing muzzle with the greenguard halter and it seems to work. She has had it 2 years now and has never managed to remove it, she wears it every day - it comes off at night as she's stabled with soaked hay. I like it because it keeps her nice and trim looking :)

Edited to say it's the new version greenguard she wears.

Greenguard! I tried the Shires one and it rubbed my greedy horse's muzzle raw. My horse has worn his greenguard all summer and it has kept him from getting too fat. He can still eat enough through it to maintain weight even when worn 24 hours. The leather straps are breakable if it gets caught on something. I have gradually had to replace them one by one with spur straps which work just as well.
