Morning, those of you with working dogs, could you recommend any training books that you have found particularly helpful.

I have two trained springers, but I haven't trained one from a puppy yet, and am hoping to next year, so I thought I should swot up over the winter! I have a good grasp of commands and upkeep of these, but I would not know in which order or when to indtroduce for example.

Specifically, I use mine for pheasant, partridge and rabbits, and occasional water fowl.

Any help would be really appreciated.

Just checked out OH's book shelf. He has The Versatile Gundog and Training Retrievers on there if any help. I know he trained a lab and a cocker from pups a few years ago.

Anything by Keith Erlandson or Peter Moxon, but my favourite is "Spaniels: Their Breaking for Sport and Field Trials" by Carlton (out of print but you'll find a copy on the second hand lists).

For a bit of fun try General W N Hutchinson's "Dog Breaking, The Most Expeditious Certain and Easy Method whether great excellence or only mediocrity be required with odds and ends for those who love the dog and gun". Get the 10th Edition (at least) printed in 1898 which has footnotes on the footnotes!

Books can be expensive, even secondhand, so don't forget your local library. They can get a book for you for pennies if they don't have it on their shelves.
