Just as the title reads really. My mare has a very tuggy tail - takes me ages to get the knots out and its not even that thick

Any recommendations would be great, thanks.

either pig oil, or ALVA sparkle.

furniture polish(!) would go no where near my horses manes/tails, the silicone in them will break the hair

Udder cream. When your doing your mudfever prevention, wipe the excess off your hands through the mane and tail. No greasiness, slipperyness, nasty chemicals or anything else and it works brilliantly.

Definitely pig oil and sulphur ! Shy's mane and tail are in fab condition, and have grown so much since I started using it. In fact his forelock is now growing past his muzzle, and may have to be plaited for riding soon.

Wowsers!! :D

Have heard about pig oil and sulpher but never used it. How do you apply it etc? I may have to get myself some. Thanks.

Cowboy Magic Detangler or Canter Mane and Tail Conditioner. Both are EXCELLENT.

I find pig oil (if used too much) attracts dust and dirt as it's an oil. It's great, used with caution.

I use the p o s every week, and just use enough to cover the boy's crest area, or tail bone, then brush it down into the mane or tail, maybe with a little extra thrown in. The mane does get a bit dusty at first, but when you wash it out it's fab. Shy has it on all the time tho atm . If you put it on the ends of the tail, all the mud will slip off.

I put it on his legs every ten days or so, and his feathers are now amazing - and again the mud just slides off. Mind you, I do put sudocream round the heel area as well to really stop mud fever, and it all is working really well.

i use canter mane and tail spray and its brilliant, my horse has a good lay down in her bed each night and her tail is FULL of woodchip flakes, just use the spray a couple of times a week and it makes the tail so easy to brush out. i also use the ostler mane and tail comb.....:D

Robinsons own is really good and cheap. The scented one is brill. Everyone always walks past Barney when I am doing his tail and ask 'what's that lovely smell'. I replied it could be me as I always wear Chanel No 5 on the yard. One sniff of my neck and they all go after sniffing Barneys bum, no it's not you it's Barney. What a waste of £50 when Barneys bum smells better than I do:D

My horse has a longish mane and I use Carr and Day Mane and Tail Conditioner on it, I think it is great or there is even Netex 7 day mudy away but I find that it leaves the mane and tail a tad lank and greasy looking (like someone who has not washed their hair for a long time!!

Get it ready mixed from ebay, slather on using hands. It won't burn your skin or the horse's. I put mine in a Fairy Liquid bottle so I can squirt it on then massage in for feathers and tail. I do avoid the dock area-doubt it would harm, tho. Do a patch test first just in case.

Pig oil is used (obviously!) to show pigs so I suppose it's safe for skin as it's directly put on the pig. Given you can avoid putting it near skin if you're careful, there's no reason for it to burn the horse in strong sunlight. It's a lot cheaper than Canter Mane and Tail.:)

Silicone, or derivatives thereof, can be found in the vast majority of commercial human and equine shampoos and conditioners, usually in the form of dimethicone or cyclomethicone, and will not usually contribute to hair breakage.
Furniture polish, however, is a crap way of trying to detangle manes and tails!

LOL!!

I would have thought on pics it was to keep the skin supple and not as a hair conditioner?

The only time i have seen pig oil used on horses coats was on some fat little show ponies at HOYS, i thought it looked horrible, made the coat look most unnatural.

Canter Mane & Tail. I had the Robbies one last time. It stank of mens aftershave eugh. Not sure I'll be trying the pig oil/furniture polish version.
