Recommend me a nice girth please

I'm looking for suggestions for a nice girth for my TB please. Currently he's going round in a Shires Arma one that I bought him with elastic at both ends and I do sometimes wonder if the elastic is a bit too stretchy, plus it seems to take a while to dry so I thought maybe I'll look for something else for a Christmas present for him.

I don't have strong feelings about elasticated or not so long as the elastic is sturdy and strong. If it is elasticated I prefer it on both sides though. I also don't really have a view about straight or anatomical and am open to persuasion either way. The choice is so bewildering though that it's really confusing.

Would probably struggle to justify the cost of a Fairfax but don't mind forking out a reasonable amount for something decent.

Thanks

If it makes you feel any better not wanting to justify a Fairfax I did and I'm currently back using my old regular cheap synthetic Thorogood type!

I was going to buy a Professional Choice girth for Wig and the Old Mill saddlery website was the cheapest place - I was about to buy it when one of those "you might also like" things popped up at the bottom. It was an Old Mill saddlery version of the PC one - and £35 instead of £90. I bought both and couldn't really see a difference so sent the PC one back. I really like it and Wig seems to go well in it but it is elasticated so might not be what you want. Before that I had a Wintec one and there was nothing wrong with that either. I only replaced it as it started to crack after a good few years.

Thanks, it's difficult isn't it? Some people seem to sing their praises and then I hear stories of horses getting really nasty sores from them and I'm just not prepared to take the risk for that amount of money. Also I don't really think any girth is worth that amount of money unless it actually rides the horse for me! I actually wouldn't rule a Thorogood, just more in the usual synthetic material as the Shires one I get is a slightly different material and just seems to permanently feel damp.

Prolite? They're non-elastic, nicely shaped, and about 1/3 of the price of the fairfax. All of mine are in them, and all go well.

Yes that is an option and one I am considering. My other horse went in a short Prolite and it suited him well, I'm just a bit cautious as I have heard mixed stories about them giving some horses sores.

I'm always interested in a bargain! I'll go and have a look. I don't know what I think about elasticated or not, I always preferred not but I read that ex-racers like elasticated girths so that's what I've gone with so far. I just worry about over-tightening them when they're elasticated, although generally I get told off for my girth being too loose so maybe I'm worrying unnecessarily!

My lad has a neoprene girth. I think the brand is Hy. No elastic, binding or seams and very quick drying. He’s fully clipped and trail hunting without any girth problems.

I don't dislike the Fairfax but I do wonder if my saddle feels more secure with the old girth. I'm in the same boat though, I wanted better than "cheap basic" so went all out, Its fine, but it's nothing special.

I use a Kentaur leather anatomical girth on Arabi as he has a forward girth groove.

Louis has a Flexi girth it stops his saddle moving.

Both very good but have very different purposes.

Thanks all, I've ended up ordering a Professionals Choice girth from Old Mill Saddlery, they didn't have their own brand cheaper option in the shape I wanted sadly.

Hopefully this will be okay when it turns up but there's some other good options to look at here if not.

I would recommend the Dabbs waffle elasticated girth, if you search on here you'll find a few posts talking about various designs :), unless you're wanting to shout for leather then I recommend this and the Stubben cord girth.

I had the arma for my TB I lost 2 months ago and I agree that as much as he loved it, in the winter it was an absolute pain as it took so long to dry!

I know you have already bought one, but I have the kentucky young horse girth for that saddle now and my other TB is in a mono flap and he goes in an anatomical leather one from equipride (nothing special but he has no complaints).

In 30 odd years of buying tack - and a lot of girths - the best I've found is Professionals Choice (I use the Ventech). Definitely worth it.
I would agree, all their stuff is pretty good. Unfortunately I have WOW saddles now so cannot use elasticated girths, but still have the Ventech on my trekking saddle. So easy to keep clean too.
