With all the rain I haven't been able to ride at all since my new girl arrived last Saturday. Can anyone recommend a good rain sheet please? Something lightweight and breathable as she really doesn't need rugging and I don't want her uncomfortable just so I can ride :)

The Amigo no-fill rugs are great, they're very lightweight and surprisingly waterproof :) (I'm always recommending these!)
Would still be a bit wary about putting any kind of waterproof on if its humid as they'll all heat them up a bit, but these are by far the best I've found and they last for ages too x

I'm very impressed with my shires tempest lite. It is SERIOUSLY waterproof, but may not be as breatheable as others.

I have an Amigo, 600D, on both horses its great in light showers but it leaks in the heavy rain that weve had. Its a great price and would recommend it, for a 'sheet' but they do a 1200D which I believe is more waterproof but not sure on how much it is.

I have never used one, but I think one of the brands (is it rambo?) do a liner for their fly rugs. I would have thought this would be cooler than a proper rug. Also (think its bucas) do a sun/showers sheet- again not tried one, and don't know how they'd stand up to heavy rain! I have been letting my boys get wet recently because their breathable no filling rugs are still making them sweat :(

Thanks everyone, I'll mooch around the Amigo range :)

horsemadelsie - thanks for the suggestion of fly rug liners! May well be better than a proper rug.

Another Amigo lite recommendation here. I have the 1200 one and have seen no leaks at all. With a larger neck cover it also makes a great sweet itch rug in the wet weather!!

Another Shires fan :)

Have yet to find the weather that gets through the Shires (it stayed waterproof through last winter's hurricane days) and it is a good comfortable fit for a big broad shouldered horse. And best of all, I bought it as a back up, because it was the cheapest No fill I could find, and it's turned out better than all the expensive big names we've had before! (it's the Tempest Lite I have, btw).

shires tempest lite, kept mine bone dry in all this heavy rain, she doesnt get hot in it and theres lots of room in it

edit..didnt see the other tempest lite fans before i posted!! they r good!

So Amigo or Shires :) Ideally I'd want a light colour to help keep her cool but so far have only found dark colours in either range.

I am thoroughly pissed off with so called 100% waterproof light weight turnouts leaking. I've had 2 Amigos (600D though) and both leaked, a Mark Todd, again, leaked, oh and shrank!! So, I thought I must get what I pay for and shelled out on a super expensive Bucas Sunshower which also claims to be 100% waterproof - alas it certainly is not!! Perhaps the clue should have been in the title!

I hate Shires rugs - perhaps a 1200D Amigo is the way to go but I'm fed up of shelling out money on useless rugs! If it would only stop raining this woudn't be an issue!

In my experience a rug needs to have a little bit of fill or a fleece lining to be truly waterproof - I have a couple of Weatherbeetas with 100g of fill and they're great. Also a Bucas Power turnout with the fleece lining (but no fill) and that too has been fab, but obviously not so good when its very mild but wet.....

Was only browsing the forum to see if anyone had reviewed waterproof fly rugs, but felt compelled to register and post as some of you seem to be experiencing so much trouble finding a truly waterproof no fill rug/rainsheet. My 15.3 has been using his Weatherbeeta (Landa?) Freestyle rainsheet for 2 years now with never a leak. I use it with or without the detachable no fill neck (purchased separately), which I also use on my standard neck 100g version of the same rug, and the neck has never leaked either. Except for the heavy snow we had during the winter before last, he has only used these 2 waterproofs, and mainly the rainsheet/no fill, so it's had plenty of use to test it. He has had it on in showers a couple of times recently, up to about 15/16 degrees probably, and although he was warm underneath, he was certainly not sweating, even after a race around, so I'd say it's pretty breathable too. However, if you're still worried a full rainsheet might be too warm, how about either the Shires Performance maxiflow combo fly rug or the new Weatherbeeta Equalize Freestyle combo fly rug. These are both the type that are waterproof across the topline but mesh from half way down the sides, allowing more air flow. I'm deciding between these two myself right now, hence browsing the forum. I love Weatherbeeta freestyle-cut rugs - never slip on my boy even though he loves a race and a roll, and never rub, so am hoping this fly rug may be the same. The Shires one has the benefit of a belly flap though, for added fly protection, so that's my dilemma...
One last word re waterproof qualities - can't understand why horse owners insist on washing their turnout rugs, that then need to be re-proofed only never as effectively as the original proofing. Is it that important that he looks sparkly clean in his rug? Surely more important he be dry :)
