Hi,
So after finding out my little mare is being returned from where she was on loan, I dug out all her rugs to find, they are definately dying!
The only rug that seems to still be waterproof and still in one piece is a horrible medium weight that doesnt fit her whatsoever :( After having a little breakdown about the fact that I cant afford loads of new expensive rugs and her livery bill now, I though I'd ask what types of cheapish rugs do you recommened, not compromising too much on quality though! Ohhh and if anybody has any money saving tips for winter, Just off to cry a little bit more now :( THANKS!

Money saving tip
Buy a fleece rug, a lightweight rug and a heavyweight rug. one of each.
If it is cold use the LW. A bit colder - use the fleece and LW together. very cold - use the HW and if it is really artic use the fleece and the HW.

I'd go for a liner system myself like PE and horse wear.

For example a 40g rain sheet from PE is £90 then each liner is £40ish pounds, although the horse wear ones fit exactly the same so you may pick up some from eBay. So you have 4 rugs for £200 that are good quality, fit well, easy to wash (stick them in the washing machine)

Thanks! Yes I usually prefer a good quality medium weight and then put layer under it. I have heaps of fleeces, and she has one lightweight stable rug, so really I just need the medium weight fixed neck and then some cheapies to layer under it. Shes a 15hh very slight mare, with long legs and a short body! She normally wears a 5ft9 but even then sometimes these can look huge on her. I love the fit of amigos, and my other horse has a joules rug which fits really well :) Shall upload a piccy so you have a rough body shape!

I'm same as digger66 - have a few & layer them up. My best bargain came last year in the -15degree weather. My mam was chucking out an old duvet so I sewed some buckles on the front & it made a fabulous under rug that kept him toasty warm through the winter!

This was her last year when she was 4, pretty much the same shape but filled out alot and gained some weight (which will hopefully stay on!) :)

ooo love the duvet idea! My budget depends on best price for good quality really, Im a sucker for the horses having the best and me looking abit of a mess!

Like some people have said, I would just go with a lightweight, fleece and heavy. Just one tip though, try not to buy the checked design rugs, they tend to rip more easily for some reason! ;)

Alot of the rugs that are bargains, will be far too generous around the neck for your horse. :(

I know that Wetherbeeas are normally far too big around the neck for my girls (who also fit Amigos well), but this Saxon (budget WB?) looks like a slimmer cut. I've never had one, so I can't comment on it's quality/fit.

The other option would be to get a half neck/wug style rug. I find that these are great on slim build horses.

Didn't your horse sweat in a duvet? My pony is getting the Bucas Smartex. It's a M/W but a lady said it got her horse through last winter as it's quite technical (and expensive). I buy rugs that seem to have a good rep, in the hope that I'll not have to replace them too often.
