I'm after a treeless saddle for my boy, equivalent to a 17 inch seat. I am on a pretty tight budget (really really tight!!), any recommendations? would probably go for a used one too, are there any good sites apart from ebay where i'd be likely to pick one up? (have already searched ebay!)

I use a barefoot every now and again. I wouldnt be happy spending less that £250 on a new one as I would worry about quality, there are some really dodgy copies etc out there so be careful and stick to the brands. And remember the pads are about £60.

If you can by chance find a treefree Dartmoor one secondhand for that price, snap it up, beautiful saddles and GB made too. It might be hard to find one for the budget tho even secondhand. But most treelesses do need to be used with the pad designed for that saddle, so ideally find one that comes with that.

I was happy to spend a reasonable amount on mine as I knew it would last, wouldn't have to worry about losing money on it in 6 months time, and I could use it on other horses. I have a HM Fhoenix Vogue which has been fabulous, and will be buying a HM FlexEE next year I hope. Those are a super price but I believe there is still quite a backlog.
There are lots of poor quality cheap treelesses out there though! I would also be wary of anything too cheap.

Had to get a treeless for my just backed 3.5 yr old, as no withers and trouble fitting a treed saddle.
tried a friends Dream saddle, it was brill, felt really comfy, and pony moved much better and free'er than in the treed saddle that we had backed her in, (only used it once to find it didnt fit and was pinching her shoulders, so she wasnt walking forward free'ly enough)
got it off ebay £400 with pad and girth.:)

I second the HM saddles, I picked up a 2nd hand Phoenix off E Bay for under £500. The FlexEE is cheaper but just as good quality as the Phoenix and the Vogue, it is incredibly light and synthetic so no constant saddle soaping :) :)

Beware of cheap treeless - you get what you pay for and can damage your horses back. Some of the cheapie ones are made largely of cardboard:eek:

Dream Team, Barefoot and HM saddles are very good, but check whether you need a special numnah on the Dream Team or Barefoot saddles. HM saddles don't need special numnahs. If you haven't used a treeless before it is important to get someone experienced to help you fit it, you don't just slap them on and go!

I am considering one of these at the moment. we are buying a LW cob mare. She has very high withers and currently no muscles built up at all so dont want to get a saddle fitted until she is more as she will be generally.
There are some cheap treeless ones on ebay but am worried that it will do more harm than good. She has been ridden in a saddle that was rubbing her withers so she is very sensitive at the moment.
Not sure wether to get an adjustable synthetic or treeless for now
