As title suggests, I'm moving to Taunton and would like some vet recommendations please!

I keep my horses barefoot so open to that would be good.

I have an unwell pony at the moment so need someone to pick up where current vet leaves off with diagnosis.

Would also be good if they do teeth.

Ditto isle valley, always had fab service and know many others who have had too :) did work experience with Dominic 15 odd years ago and he puts up with my musings and pointing at franks feet ;)

I would use Western counties just north of Cullompton if I lived nearer. I use them as specialists when my horse has to go to horse hospital. They probably saved my foal's life this year when he was an in patient with them (after my vet seemed to think little was wrong with him) After that I felt very kindly towards them!

So Western counties is 17mins drive from where I'll be, Isle Valley 26mins. Should I just use Western Counties or will they be more pricey being specialist?

Pretty sure Western Counties do an annual package for a one off fee which includes vaccs and teeth checks etc. I'm with The Mount in Wellington

I never used Western Counties for anything except complex stuff (x-rays etc). Isle Valley do area days, where there is no call-out charge for injections or other routine stuff that are booked for the day they are in your area. Western Counties may do to, but I would check with them.

If you are down that direction I can also recommend a farrier, Adam Childs. He's not a barefoot specialist but is a very good farrier and helped me take mine barefoot, he won't help with diet etc the way a trimmer will but if yours are already established he might work out cheaper if you can get a few others on the yard using him for shoeing. He's not the best at timekeeping but great with the horses. I only switched to Deborah because I moved yards.

unfortunately I can only use Western counties as specialist as I live too far away. I am sure they may be expensive however they are good and they have excellent facilities and equipment. I went to them through my own vet when my horse was ill. I have had 2 horses there for inpatient treatment. The best thing about them was they are relatively small, there was always a vet there when I arrived and they dealt with me rather than like some vets who will only talk to my vet. They discussed everything they were doing directly with me, gave me all the explanations and alternatives.
One horse went there on a Sunday as an emergency with colic. The lorry had barely stopped before staff were grabbing him from every direction to get him in and under control (we were all very panicky!) and ready for treatment. Within a couple of minutes the senior partner was on the case. Everything was discussed and explained to me. They had a very high staff ratio to horses. I felt they gave a quality service and couldn't fault their care.

If you have a horse who only sees the vet for annual vacs anyone may be ok. If you have a horse who is more "fond" of vet treatment I would use them as if you need a specialist you will probably end up there anyway. .

When you get settled go and visit them and ask about their services. Have a look around the place. See if you like them.

TBF Isle have reasonable facilities, OP theatre etc. We haven't had anything they can't deal with, they arrange PRP and shockwave for the mare, had F in for 2/3 days chemotherapy cream treatment etc.

I use Western Counties for all work and don't find them any more expensive than the others to be honest. Yes, they have zone days and you can still ask for which vet you want, have used them ever since they set up and always very pleased with service and treatment they give :) I'm about 50 miles from Cullompton.
