Morning,

I know loads of people on here are very hot on their high viz. Can you recommend some (currently only have an old manky tabard) that wont break the bank but will be both flourescent and reflective. Would like stuff for both me and the horse should we part company I'd like him to be visible. He's a wide, warm native so can't really wear a whole sheet esp in the summer - didn't really know what my alternatives were for him.

Cheers :)

for the horse you can get leg wraps, tail guard thing that goes round top of tail, little slips for the reins and browband, breastplate thing.

i have a bomber jacket that is hi-vi and it is great, keeps you warm and if you get one from ebay or somewhere like B&Q or screw fix will be cheaper than a propper horsey one

I like the equisafety stuff. We have a full quarter sheet and a summer weight mesh sheet. Plus strips which go on the reins. You don't need a tail guard if you have a quarter sheet and ned won't tolerate leg wraps. I'm a big fan of high viz in all seasons - although we have had a fellow rider upset becuase she said she couldn't get her horse past us because we were "too pink".

For the rider I think the tabards which also have flashing lights are very effective especially at dusk. There are several companies which make them - although I get mine off ebay. Plus a hat band and reflective backs for hands / gloves.

Think about your colour too - research suggests that yellow on a dark coloured horse shows up better and pink on a grey. (Unless you just like pink.....)

Suggest you pay a visit to a large builders merchants such as Jewsons.

You will find excellent jackets, warm, water proof, many pockets, a handy pocket for mobile phone under front zip. About £30.00

They also have a host of reflective gear that can be adapted and/or sewn/stuck onto your tack, exercise sheets and rugs.

All at sensible prices and not the absurd prices in tack shops and saddlers.

As above, Arco is also a good one where they do polo shirts, fleeces and jackets of all sizes and description. Because they are for builders and not for horse riders they tend to be cheaper :D

Think about a hat cover or hat band aswell which can be seen over hedges etc. This definately gives an advance warning to drivers.

I personally also think that yellow stands out on roads better than pink or orange.

Leg bands or the yellow brushing boots (if you wear them for hacking) help catch the eye as they are constantly moving as the horse walks.

I would go to to a builders place too - they have hi vis fleeces with reflective strips. Thats said, all my hi vis stuff is from Equafleece which although it is pricey, lasts and washes really well.

TBH I wouldn't bother with a flashing tabard, the people I have seen riding out with a horseware flashing vest would really have been better served with hi vis and relective bits. I do have a red light which is always in my hi vis gilet pocket to put on if the light fails (on dark days) but imho, if you need to go out wearing lots of lights, you really shouldn't be on the roads - definitely not the unlit country roads like I have round me anyway. :o

ETA for cheap summer gear, buy the hi vis running/cycling tops you can get from outdoor shops :)

Hmmm, I like the new Equisafety "Polite" range and when funds permit may well treat my boy - also I've got a luvverly "Equafleece" fleecey quarter sheet in hi-viz which keeps my lad's sweet little bottie warm in the winter plus they do some really nice Endurance tops, all in fleece, which are fantastic. Their stuff wears well and is fantastically warm and cosy.

These mesh sheets by V-bandz are brill. I use mine from the spring, right through the summer and into the autumn. It was a fantastic buy because I got it from the V-bandz trade stand at a show and it was on a special offer.

Faracat - what size one did you get, i've been looking at getting one but not sure how big they are except the x large one which gives you the measurements
couldnt decide between that and the tail wrap!

My lightweight 15.3hh has the large size (she wears a 6ft turnout rug although she needs 6ft3 in horseware rugs) and it also fitted a 16.2 TB and a 16.1 WB. When my little arab is backed I will get her the same mesh sheet but in medium because she will probably only make 15.1hh.

I hope that helps. :)

Thanks guys that's great. I never thought of going to a builders merchant or anything. Loving the mesh exerise sheet as well - mesh is exactly what we need forthe spring / summer.

Thanks :)

Buy a long sleeved Hi-Viz jacket as other road users will be able to see your hand signals far more clearly. Also suggest Hi-Viz hat band, reign covers, tail bandage and leg wraps.

Crikey, I did a double take on the Polite range! I can see how they would be very effective. Slightly concerned that I may get arrested for impersonating a Police Officer though!:D

Thank you my 17hh ISH takes 6'6 rugs and normally a 4'9 ex sheet so i think he'll need the extra large which is good as they have the measurements for that!

Owning a black horse, and having seen last year how a girl in dark clothes leading two dark bays almost looked invisible in the dappled light under some trees, we are now in hi-viz overdrive.

I have a Rocketfish fleece jacket, and Equasafety fleece (can't rate highly enough) bands for the reins and cheek pieces, leg wraps, flashing arm bands - and was thinking about a hi-viz hat band, and a high viz neck strap from which I could hang one of those little flashing lights. However, haven't quite gone that far yet.

Other products (getting addicted here) I saw with interest were the gloves with the hi-viz bit over the back of the hand, and a short whip with hi-viz tape wrapped round it.

I am firmly of the opinion I would rather be seen.
