Hi everyone im in the process of getting a saddle fitter out for my heavy wide cob shes currently got a wintec but it tends to slip what saddles do you recommend?

Thanks in advance :)

I don't know about saddles for wide horses (we're the opposite end of the scale at present) but I've a thorowgood which I love. Extremely comfortable saddle. I also think they make a range aimed at cobs. Check out their website :)

I tried a lot of synthetics, and bought a GFS Genesis - beautiful, and at first fitted really well. BUT being a growing cob, it soon didn't fit. That's when we went treeless, and have never looked back. You can get some lovely Barefoots on ebay.

I have just changed from a wintec pro dressage to a Thorowgood t4 cob dressage for my fell pony. She is much more free through her back in it and working really well. Definitely worth getting the cob fit as they are designed for big shoulders and broad backs. However my butt seems to prefer the pro as I now get butt ache when riding for longer than 40mins. I think it's the wider seat? I'm hoping it'll break in a bit in time as its still pretty new.

I've got two synthetics.

A griffin endurance saddle, lovely saddle very comfortable sadly it does not fit either of my current ponies. I've had it since the mid 90s and it still looks in top condition.

My other synthetic is a Maxim, cheap and cheerful. I bought it as an emergency saddle when my leather saddle was being repaired and I wished to compete while I didn't have the leather saddle. Again I bought it in the mid 90s. It is showing a little wear on the flaps now. It is very light. I'm using this on one of mine at the moment with a leather girth, I don't recommend mixing the two as both are being rubbed.

Top tip with a synthetic, change the girth straps to leather, those synthetic straps are awful things. Having said that not changed mine yet and they are still in lovely condition on both saddles.

I have a Thorowgood T4 pony saddle, which my pony loves. Only trouble is, my back doesn't. I rode in it 4 times, then must confess I went back to his old saddle with a front riser. Everybody raves about them, so I do think it's my back rather than the saddle and I must say, it's very well made, with leather girth straps. I hated the hardness of the seat, so put my Acavallo gel pad on there and that sorted it!!

Still not sure whether to try again, as I paid nearly £300 for it, which is a lot of money if it sits gathering dust and it did look very smart, on him!

I've had a look at the thorowgood cob gp saddle today it looks comfy and a deeper seat than my wintec and more padding ill see what the saddle fitter says when he comes out :)
