Hi,

Just wondering whether people can recommend a good insurance company?

How much do people pay for their insurance?

I know that you can get separate horse / rider insurance - but are there different levels of insurance?

Does having the horse vetted affect insurance? And if something is found at the vetting and you purchase regardless does that mean that that issue / condition is not covered?

Petplan Equine are excellent - never had a problem with them.
I pay £28 for one and £30 per month for the other - no sure which one is for which - one is a 10 year old TB and the other is a 3 year old NF x cob. They are both insured for £600 as I'm not bothered what I get back for them if anything were to happen to them - the only thing I am bothered about being covered, is vets fees.

im with e&l for the old bird, they are great but just want it for public liability and nfu for the baby but they are stoopidly expensive, so will be moving back to pet plan when renewal is due in Feb and April!

I'm with Stoneways, they have been great. Pay up no questions asked and quickly, reasonably priced and lots of flexibility with building your policy. Highly recommend them.

Ditto this! Have had two claims with Stoneways and they've been fantastic to deal with. Also half the price of PetPlan for me.

I'm with KBIS. Paid for mine for a year in advance and it was just over £300. That's for an 11 year old and includes public liability, tack and vets fees up to £3k.

I have recently had to claim on it for dental work and they paid out straight away - I was so relieved!!

We've been with what is now Equine Insurance Solutions for over ten years and four horses, have had big claims with two including death, and they've been fab.

KBIS here too I haven't thankfully had to claim but they seemed reasonably priced with decent cover and when I researched them I found positive reviews from other users :D

I'm with animal friends, for public liability £3000 vet fee's loss of use and death I pay 14.23 per month but instead of a set excess fee I pay 17.5% of the bill which in some cases works out better!

Thanks for your replies guys :D

Do animal friends payout when requested? I used to be with them with my dog until I heard from a local vet that with their dog and cat insurance they put up right fights and don't pay out.

I now have 3 votes for KBIS and 3 for Stoneways - anymore??

I know alot of people slate them but i'm with E&L, made a claim last month & just had email saying they are posting cheque to vets. Have had absolutely no probs with them, can contact very easily & was a smooth, stressfree claim. Premiums not ridiculous for good cover. :D

Another for KBIS, been with them about 15 yrs now and they've always been brilliant and very quick to settle up let alone that they're always very helpful and friendly.
Friend is having difficulty being paid out by Petplan for a straight forward humane destruction over a month ago and it's not even a large amount of money so I wouldn't touch them with a bargepole.

Would second petplan many boy has had numerous claims with them due to his arthritis and allergic reactions and not once have they questioned any my claims and always paid out promptly. They might be slightly more expensive but I couldn't fault them.

Was with nfu but left after they doubled my premiums. Now with carriage house who I've been claiming for my horse's bone spavin diagnosis etc from. They paid out within a couple weeks each time I send a bill.

I'm with petplan and having major problems getting them to pay out on a lameness claim. Every delay tactic in the book coming out. Really annoyed and won't be renewing with them! Friend is with e and l had worse issues with her horse than I have and they've paid out every time no questions asked. She pays less than half my premium price too.

Don't think petplan care about their customers any more. After years and years with them and no claims before now I'm moving on next year!

I am with NFU and have had quite a few claims the last one a big one for treatment for broken splint bone.

NFU were excellant and even paid some of the alternative husbandary cost of being on box rest as well as all the vet bills. Vet bills were paid directly to vet as well. However I am not sure if they are taking on new customers for horse insurance.

I would also say insure for the higher limit with vet bills as 3K does not go that far now, I insure up to 5k. The bill I had went over 3,000 as I had vet out every 10 days for 12 weeks, 2 sets of xrays and also they paid £500 towards cost of box rest.

Im with Scottish Equine. I mainly went with them due to price- they were one of the cheapest for a good policy (small excess compared to some too).

Recenelt had to make quite a large claim, they didnt quibble and paid up quickly, so would def recommend them.

I'm glad (in a perverse sort of way!) that others are having trouble with Petplan too. I don't think they appreciate that friend is a vet at Leahurst (not that they should be treated differently though) and it stands to sense that he's not going to recommend to others a company that are intent on screwing him out of what is due to him and you'd be surprised how many clients want recommendations for insurance companies from them.

Was with SEIB and found them quite good, always paid out without hassle. Animal Friends were awful, had to fight to get them to pay and had to pay my vet first.

I don't bother know, just have an emergency card and BHS Gold.

BHS gold membership for £60 for public liability, a savings account and an emergancy credit card for me. To make the premiums managable I was looking at excess of £500, which really covers an emergancy call out, stitch up and antibiotics for a silly field injury.
I personally don't believe in colic surgery so won't need cover for that and laimness if I get to the end of my £500 and the vets can't find anything then some good turnout and Dr Green usually does the trick.
I have my own land tho and I think that makes a difference to my attitude as I've no livery to pay while they are recovering and field ornaments look nice to me!

Resurrecting this thread to say I'm having a nightmare being paid out by Petplan.

Sadly lost my youngster in November, they still haven't settled my claim. I have now resorted to phoning them daily. I was told on Thursday my cheque has finally been printed and I should receive it by Friday, phoned them today as my cheque hasn't turned up and they have told me it takes them 10 days to post it once printed....???!!! I'm just waiting for customer complaints to call me back (again) to explain why. Needless to say I won't be renewing with them.

KBIS - have my stallion insured with them for £44 a month £7000 for collic vet fees, £5000 for all others, competition insurance, public liability and a few other things i cant remember :o basically he is gold insurance on competition horse grade thing :)

were with petplan but they were a pain in the bum for claims and were v expensive
