Hi, my older cob is not dropping weight as much as I would like this winter. I have done all the usual things - smaller nets when in, I will resume soaking his hay (was soaked in summer), token feed of Fast Fibre to carry joint supplements, trace clipped and just in a rainsheet to stay clean. He is only ridden 3/4 times a week now (hacked) due to daylight/work/loss of sharer/2nd horse and his physical limitations.

They are about to go onto winter grazing which is thick, long grass. They will be in at night then which means I can restrict his hay ration, but we're in Cornwall where it's very warm and rarely cold enough to help with weight loss. Strip grazing won't be an option in this field, but to be fair he just stands and gorges the fresh section of grass anyway when strip grazed so at least he'll be moving more with my other horse in the whole paddock (about 1 1/2 acres).

I think I'm going to have to look at a grazing muzzle as he must drop weight before the spring. Are there any recommendations for grazing muzzles for a 16hh+ broad head?

Many thanks ?

I found the shires Comfort grazing muzzle great for my big mare and she kept it on.... I didn't think she would. I did cut some of the mesh from round her nostrils and also I went up a size. She is usually a full and I bought the extra full size so there was no rubbing at all

I use Blue Horse Equine to source big comfortable muzzles for my HH. They have a few brands they can recommend. You should be able to google them and give them a call for some help.

Mine rubs himself on muzzles (in his efforts to eat more) so I switch between two different brands weekly so the rubbing doesn't get bad (they rub in different areas).

The thinline muzzle is brilliant. You can attach it to a headcollar of your choice and it's much lighter and nicer for them to wear than some of the others. I've tried the greenguard, comfort muzzle and dinky ponies and the thinline was the best out of those.

I rave about these too, rather than repeating what I've posted before just do a search of the forum for "thinline" or "flexible filly".
