Hey....

Im trying to get some insurance quotes for a 9 month old gelding that Im due to get soon. Petplan wont insure him until he is 1 unless he has a 2 stage vetting. I have spoken to my vets and his breeders vets who both say that there is no need for this and even a two stage vetting wont be able to be done properly because of his age. The breeders vets are very happy with him and have know him since he was born.

Sooooo my question is (as I have only ever insured horses with Petplan) who do you recommend please???? :p

I am with Amtrust. Have unfortunately had to have lots of dealings with them but they have been brilliant, very understanding and all the people that work there have horses themselves so they 'get it'! they were also the cheapest quote for me by far (although I suspect this won't be the case next year now they know how accident prone my pony is!)

I can't believe the price of insurance. I have been quoted between 700 and 1000 per yr for 15hh 7yr old hack with just PL, loss and vets bills.

ive got my lot insured with scottish equestrian, believe it or not they are an english based company, they have been brilliant paying out on sarcoids mostly and pay out very quick the vets find it so easy to get payment from them

thats alot i pay about 550 a year, thats Public liability vet bills, death any illnesses/ conditions, long term conditions they will pay 2grand a year, alternitive therapies, speciallist farriery, my tack and the trailer, and my riders insurance are all on the same policy

If your youngster is only going to be in the field (ie not showing or going for walks on roads) then pet plan will be the cheapest by far as they have a greater number of classes of use as the lowest is horses at grass. I would just have a two stage vetting done and to be honest, I'd be having it done even if the insurance didn't want it!

NFU have been great for me. I no my friend uses them as well and they were quick to pay out when her horse had to be put down to to an accident in the field.

I would avoid E&L on the basis that my vets refuse to take payments from them and I have never heard anyone recommend them. I'm with Petplan but I've heard good things about NFU.

Another vote for Kbis. I've got my 11 month old filly insured with them and you can mix and match the cover that you want with them, very good value for money and heard lots of good reviews about them!

Personally I would get the 2 stage done regardless of who was going to insure him. the breeder and the breeders vet says he is fine - but they would wouldn't they. Even if you know them i would get an independent vet out to just give him the once over. Is he blind, how is his wind, and a few basics that just then gives you peace of mind to an extent. NFu used to be absolutely brilliant BUT they are getting slower and slower about paying claims and use a 3rd party company to process the claims, who always seem to lose them

KBIS for sure. They will need a covering letter from your vet to say the foal is healthy in eyes, heart and lungs and sound without physical defects and you can pick the cover you need. If you're a BHS Gold member then you won't need their PL (which bumps any premium up) Have used KBIS for years and wouldn't dream of going anywhere else, a claim paid within 2 DAYS!

Another vote for KBIS. Insured our youngster from 8 months with them. He cut his neck in the field (god knows how!) and they paid our £400 (big cut several visits sitches, antibiotics etc) bill with no quibbles. Also coughed up quickly for a nasty foot abscess and call outs over new year bank holiday:eek:
They were fab when we lost one last year. Always answer the phone quickly and are just easy to deal with. Not quite the cheapest but far from the most expensive.
Also our vet checked him over for heart eyes soundness and straightness of limbs when we bought him (pre purchase). It did not cost a lot and it was peace of mind.
