I'm looking to find a new insurance for my 16yr old gelding. Ive just rang up scottish equine and they wouldn't insure him for more than £1200 although he's worth at least £2000. I've had numerous <u>experianced</u> people telling me that he's worth that. Lmao. I'm realy not impressed by the company.

i do agree petplan has its issues, but found claimes and delt with quickly,
as 1200 you cover should be to much,
depends on what u want covered , if want alternative therapies , third party, vets bills,
petplan cover from vet bills at 2500 and 5000- and can claim as many times as u like and wont go up, as long as the claim is not related to previous claim, then can go to town,
also include is horse is lost of stolen for free, plus any one can ride you horse with permission and be insured,
petplan is expensive but with other cheaper companyies you may not be as covered or the for the unforseen and petplan , also scotish equestian insurace services, are very good and have good ranges,
i use to work for petplan , so i would give it a go, can get quote thier website.

I use Petplan. As far as I can find they are the only company currently that does proper vets fee cover for 16+. As pinkdiesel says you need to compare not just price but what you get for it.
It's worth remembering that the "value" is only relevant if the horse dies under very specific circumstances. Persoanlly I think crucial bit is vet fee cover. Most companies don't do full cover for older horses - check the small print - many say things like "external injury cover" - so if they go lame, have respiratory problem or get colic you get nothing.
I have had claims on all 3 horses with Petplan this year &amp; have found them very straightforward.
DO NOT TOUCH E&amp;L OR ANY OF IT'S RELATED COMPANIES- it's worth asking any company you contact if they are related in any way to E&amp;L(they hide behind many names....). They are mega slow &amp; masses of small print which they have made an art form of using against clients to avoid paying out.

I was with E&amp;L with my last horse for four years and they paid out for a factured knee (over £700), a pesky cough (over £300) and over £3400 when i lost my horse to Laminitis this year. However it always takes ages to get though to them on the phone and it took over 4 months for them to send the cheque out!!!
But for cheap as chips basic insurance they were fine.
However, i'm now with Petplan as i've heard good things from others who have used them and my (new) vet recommended them.

i haven't had to use them yet.
Look in the back of some horse mags as there are loads of insurance companys out there.
Some other people on my yard use NFU but i have heard stories about them being slow at paying out...too be honest i thing all insurance people are slow at coughing up as they think it's better in their bank then yours!!!

Seib

I have had two big payouts from genuine cliams, very straight forward.

Also more to the point my vet said they are one of the better companies at paying.
