Hi All,

Excuse this being my first post but I am a lurker and decided to jump in and join the forum, albeit with a rather serious subject.

I have a lovely little 3 year old Yorkshire terrier and although she is generally a happy wee thing, she has had problems since the age of 1 with chronic cystitis.

The issue I am having is that she has had every test under the sun to get to the root cause of the issue including being admitted to the vet school hospital for ultrasounds, x-rays, bloods, urine and tests on her liver, kidneys, urinary tract and bladder. These all came back as normal, so we are at a loose end of what the actual trigger is.

She came off long term antibiotics (Baytril) and an anti inflammatory (Metacam) in April and up until today has been great with no systems or stresses. This morning she took not well again and as she has had it so often now I know the symptoms of it starting like the back of my hand - shaking at her back end, high temp and vomiting (prob due to the high temp).

The vet has pondered whether this starts with infection or actually inflammation, hence the antibiotics and anti inflammatories but we can't seem to pinpoint a cause or establish common factors that could be involved in it's onset. He even commented it could just be a 'flaw' engrained into her body from birth :( Due to this I wonder if any of you members have had anything similar and found a way of managing it or even curing it for good.

I hate to see her like this and any suggestions or feedback is welcome.
Thanks...

What are you feeding her?

I know a lot of people who claim UTIs vanished following a switch to raw feeding.

Mine has recurrent infections because of a traumatic whelp, his urinary tract is malformed (short urethra, very wide bladder neck) and it is easy for him to be exposed to infection basically.
I can't switch him completely to raw as he has high-protein intolerance but he has had no issues since I started introducing more raw meat and bones to his diet.
Maybe a coincidence, maybe not!

The last time the infection went into his bladder and he basically had a mass of tissue floating around in there :( had to be on antibiotics for two months.

Thanks for your response.

Do you know it's funny you say that as I was thinking along the food lines today as we seem to have tried everything else and at one point she was on antibiotics for 6 months solid as the infection just would not shift.

She is fed on normal dog meat, all the usual branded stuff but I also mix in some dry feed. I think it's worth trying something different as I have heard a lot of good things about raw food eating in dogs.

Where do you get the raw food from, is there specialist stockists. I have a local pet store which doees stock some forms of it but I don't really know if that would be the best place?

Butchers or supermarket, raw meat is raw meat!
DUCK is an alternative frozen brand.

There is a sticky ^^ at the top of the forum and KarynK and KatieLou Houston are very helpful if you want to send them a private message.

Great, cheers for the response.

I probably sound a bit dim asking about where to get raw meat but there are so many feed alternatives and 'natural food' suppliers it can all get a bit overwhelming.

Sounds like sticking to simplist versions of it may do the trick!

Thanks
