my boy has had spasmodic colic 4 times in 6wks, i am not doing anything majorly different, stabled on bad nights out on good nights, the past few days i have stabled him, getting ready for winter, the vet has done blood tests and he cameback with a low protein count and we tried the 5 day panacur course, but i was away for 2 days and stopped it as he got colic again after being clear for about 3 wks, for no reason he has colic again today, could it be stress from fireworks lastnight? the vet came this morning to apply cream to his sarcoid and he really does not like the vet, could he get colic cause the vet was with him, could anyone give me advice on possible preventative treatment for colic-pink powder??
the worst thing is that i have to put himbackon the 5 day panacur worming treatment and i know he will get colic again

What do you feed him?

Could be intolerances to grass. Or feed .

Get the wormer over and done with then Try feeding only dry hay (not wet, no haylage) and alfa-oil for a few weeks, with a strong pro-biotic (ask your vet for one)put him on maximum dose probiotic. and see if he colics. If he doesnt then you know that you have an food intolerance problem. Then through trial and error find out what it is that is causing the intolerance.

My boy had frequent bouts of spasmodic colic and it was everything- grass, sugar in feeds, cereals in feeds, all of this combined together that made him colic. Fed him just dry hay and alfa oil and probiotic and no colic.

Also PM H's mum on here about coligone- absolutely amazing stuff for constant colickers

We use the coligone routinely on our foals when we worm them just to protect there sensitive stomachs a bit.

I have heard that Panasur Equine guard sometimes causes stomach pain - I personally do not use it but does with Equest and Equitape

My horse used to get spasmodic colic for no apparent reason. You'd only have to sneeze and she'd get it.

My horse is 28 year old tb and worries about everything.

One main thing that has helped is the osteopath. The Osteo came out to check her over (not related to the colic) and she couldn't get near a certain part of her back. Turns out this part of the back has nerves that run down into the stomach. After a couple of treatments the colic (touch wood) has virtually disappeared.

I do feed her pink powder as this helps keep her weight on, and has supported her gut too.

It's certainly something to think about if you've tried everything else.

Also you say you've moved your horse to your house, does your horse have company? Has the colic started since you've been bringing him in at night, It could be that he is worrying when in (if on his own) and this could trigger the colic.

Beginning of this year, my mare had colic 5 times in 6 weeks, mainly after a lesson, or even during a lesson, and once on the road while hacking. Turned out to be tapeworm, even tho she was done in the october we think she must have spat it out, all was fine after a second dose. Then on friday had msg to say she'd gone down with colic again, this time it was trapped wind. Half scared to ride her out on my own incase a colic attack starts. Think i too will be looking into "coligone". (sorry to insert my own post there)

well i am uite bemused as to why he has colic so often, all of a sudden so im waiting to hear back from the coligone people and then decide what to do, i gave both my horses a couple of carrots some happy hoof and a scoop of pink powder,i want to know more about the coligone before i start him on his panacur, hopefully i can do them side by side, it could be something to do with my grass so have to try preventative in the form of biotics. lets see how we get on..

If your vet is recommending the 5-day Panacur treatment, does he suspect your horse has a high worm burden? This could certainly account for the colic.

Interesting that your horse has only started colic since you moved him. Is he eating something in your fields that is causing the colic - are there any acorns or poisonous plants? Is he getting more grazing than he used to before you moved? Were there horses on the land previously before you moved there and could he have therefore picked up worms from the pasture?

Regarding the Five Day Panacur treatment, why not ask the vet if you can do a single treatment of Equest instead. I think (but not absolutely sure) that Equest kills the encysted worms that the Five Day Panacur is meant to deal with. (And less chance of worm resistance too).

Hope you get to the bottom of his problems.

we have some plants- dock leaves mainly that i keep an eye on, i cant get them treated till the spring, the grazing is not that great, but between 2 horses they have approx 6acres, so there is eating there, i checked the wormers and the panacur does do more so i will have to stick with that.ive spoken with the coligone people and she was very helpful and hopeful that it will help him so i should get that tomorow and start the wormer the day after, i gave the vet a print out of the coligone and we were talking about ulcers but he is not worked hard if atall, i know he was a bsja showjumper before i got him so i dont know how hard he was worked then but since i have had him he has had an easy life, so for ulcers the vet more or less said he shouldnt get them just now...could he get ulcers just through being a stressy horse, for example today when the vet arrived i took him into his stable, then i went to get the mare and he was whinnyeing? for her,and stressed in his box, he couldnt see her, but within 30 seconds she was there, he is totally attached to her where as she doesnt really bother if he is not there, does anyone have a goat who i think might help??
