My gelding has suffered from recurring cystitis, He had it when we had him and went on a weeks course of antibiotics, then 3 months on it come back and was put on a 2 week course of antibiotics, so its been 2 months since his last bout and it's come back again :( its horrilbe to see him struggle to wee awful infact. I have been told by my vet he will need to have an ultra sound scan of his bladder as the infection may have caused some damage as it was left by prev owner  ( neglect really).

Just wondering if anyone's horse has had this or has had any experience with it , I dont really know what's going to happen to him or what to expect. I just know it's rare in gelding's.

Thank for reading

i have not experienced this with a gelding but our mare kept getting bouts of it this summer although anti b's put at bay it would come back after a few weeks

she was scanned and nothing was found

while out in the field i noticed she was tucking into sticky buds from the hedges

looked it up and found they could be used for cystitis

vet agreed for us to give them a try so we used to pick handfuls from the lanes for her and they seemed to work --(touch wood she as been ok up to now)

i know they are not in season now but you can buy them dried from

How old is your horse O? Worrying that it hasn't responded to antibx and that it's recurring. I'd start with easy stuff. Does he drink enough? Access to clean water in the field? Not got those hideous automatic waterers in his stable? Field bully stopping him getting to the water? Peeing enough? I'd certainly try to monitor for a week. Has your vet sedated him to get him to drop his penis out for you to check for thorns, ulcers, beans? If he's a youngster and he had a long term, untreated waterworks infection, it could have done a lot of damage and I'd certainly get scans done. If he's in his teens could it be a conformational thing eg narrow ureter/urethra? If he's old has the vet talked to you about tumours etc and surgical solutions? If it's serious (and hoping it's just a difficult infection that needs more powerful, specific antibx) then part or all of his penis can be amputated with few ill effects. Odd things: dunno if herpes could be involved? Sarcoids? Poor lad does need it seen to asap or it could deteriorate further eg if he tries to not pee because of pain then the urine in his bladder will get stale and prone to causing further trouble. Do let us know how he is - got fingers crossed xxx

He has just turned 10 he only goes in the field on his own so he has as much water as he want's and has fresh water everyday in his stable, He dose not wee fully as in empty his bladder and just dribbles and then will have a big gush. Vet has checked his willy fully out and can not find any lump's or bump's, swelling , Spoken to are vet and because it not an emergency :( he can not come out until tuesday so he is on bute till monday ( then off it so it wont mask anything) Its just I never know a gelding to get it so I am rather scrathing my head with it all. Thank you horsedreams I will buy some and give them a try. Will keep you updated on how he does my poor sausage :( Thank for the reply's

So the vet has been and he has taken a wee sample and some blood's ( just incase) And we will have the results back in a couple of days. He is back on some pain killers while we get the results back. We will take it from when we get the results back if he goes for a scan etc.

My boy had a similar problem, vet could not find anything so I put him on Global Herbs Eazipee which got him back peeing normally!
My friend also used it on her cob who would stop for small pees about four times on a hack, he now only stops for one!

Cystitis is less common in males as you say, but is often as a result of bladder stones - which are more common in males than females. I have diagnosed a mare with cystitis due to bladder stones ( very very rare!!) - this was by ultrasound scan and then scope of the bladder. For any recurrent cystitis ultrasound and scoping would be the next step.
