Hello Everyone!

My husband is not in the slightest bit horsey and bought me a beautiful Caldene red show jumping jacket for my Birthday (the dear), with the best of intentions.
I have always been of the opinion (brought up by an old-fashioned military horsey mother) that red jackets are for those of a hunting persuasion, or super-duper (male) show jumpers.
Thus, I have the awful task of deciding whether I (of decent (modest) unaffiliated show jumping capabilities) have the right to wear such a thing? I understand that under BSJA rules, when I affiliate, I cannot wear it.
I know he would be deeply hurt if I did not use it, but I also conscious of the impression it gives fellow riders.
I know that there have been a few posts like this in the past, but I would appreciate an up to date opinion... Thank you!

i'd not wear one :o
but i come from a hunting past so it would just seem wrong to me (as does velvet collars - b ut saying that i do love my dressage top ariat bromonts - double standard much? :o)
maybe just explain to him and swap it for a nice navy or black one? i'm sure you could blag the rules a bit to make it sound like you'd not get much use from it - ie thank you its lovely but i feel bad not using it much so can we swap it for a different colour one?)

Lovely of him to buy it, but I couldnt wear it either :o

I think the 'against the rules' blag might be in order.

Two options
1) Use the against rules get out. I certainly wouldn't wear one at unaff

2) Stick in back of wardrobe in the vain hope that one day you could wear it. I have a very good quality one sat in mine. Bought it for a whole £5 new in a closing down sale. One day when the moon turns blue I might get to use it. :o

I think you'll find that under Bsja rules you can wear it. I competed for years in a green show jacket, never had anyone pull me up on it. Now I've got a very flashy royal blue one.

Nan-bit......There is nothing stopping you wearing a red show jacket for affiliated show jumping. below are the rules regarding jackets worn for British Show Jumping:-

Jackets: the following are permitted:
Traditional style tailored jackets in dark colours (black, navy, green, brown, burgundy, grey
or red) with the exception of British Team colours (see below).
Riders may apply to the UK Show Jumping Development Committee to register alternative,
single colours.
Traditional style tailored hacking jackets.
New styled jackets consisting of one or two base colours with piping in a different colour must
be approved by the BSJA. No other rider can ride in jackets of the same colours which have already
been registered and no rider, owner or sponsor may register more than one set of colours.
Up to 3 sponsor logos can appear on the right hand sleeve, all three to be contained
with in a space of 14 x 6cms and one sponsor logo on the breast pocket
(approximately 3 x 4cm). The British Show Jumping logo will appear on all left
hand jacket sleeves supplied by the BSJA to licensed companies in colours red, white and blue.
Rider's full names may appear on the back of the jacket in upper and lower case letters, using
the type face Cosmos Light and letters to be 4 cms in height. New styled jackets must be fully
zipped up during competition.
Members of the Armed Forces or Police Force may wear their uniforms however, headgear must
conform as above.
N.B. Jackets of the following description are reserved for the members of the British
Nations Cup Team or Championship Team.
• Dark Blue
• Red collar with white piping
• Red trim above pockets
• Brass buttons

No jackets, other than as detailed above, may be worn in the arena at an affiliated show, for example:
New styled jackets that DO NOT have the British Show Jumping badge on the left hand sleeve.
Traditional tailored jackets with sponsor logos on the sleeve of the jacket or names on the back.
Any jacket in the colours reserved for members of the British Nations Cup Team or Championship
Team.
In hot weather competitors may be permitted to compete without jackets, at the
Judges' discretion, but they must wear white shirts with either long or short sleeves,
no braces, and ties must be firmly secured, also when in the Collecting Ring and walking the course.

You should be fine, but if you want to change it for another colour you can always tell him a 'Porky'. :)

You can wear it at BS but should only really do so if you have won a 1.30mtr (or higher) open class with a first prize exceeding £100 I think. :o
