Red Diesel

No, there is no tax paid on it for road use, therefore it is not suitable. You could I suppose just use it off road, and then top up with normal diesel for road journeys, however if your tank is dipped the red diesel would still show up - so the bottom line is don't even think about using it - the fines if caught are substantial

If you put red diesel in a road vehicle and then fill it up with DERV (normal diesel) afterwards there will always be a residue of red in the tank, if the tank is spot checked, which is happening more often now at showgrounds, the customs and excise will confiscate your vehicle and also fine you heavily.

If you are serious about using red Diesel what you need to do is add a second 'secret' tank to your vehicle so that the normal tank is tested and the other tank runs your vehicle.

Also someone once said about filtering it thru a pair of tights not sure how successful that is.

You think Customs and Excise aren't wise to 'secret tanks'? of course they are, they are like rottweilers, and the tights don't work

tights don't work cause it is just the same as normal diesel with a red dye added to it can be distinguished from normal diesel

We buy red and white diesel in bulk on the farm. Would never put red in the road vehicles though, only the tractors and JCB.

I cannot tell you how many times we've been spot checked. I assume it has something to do with the "Keep Britain farming" sticker in my rear windscreen. Seems inspectors are desperate to catch us out, but we would never do it.

I've seen them at alot of the Agricultural shows and cattle markets checking vehicles.

Even if you change your tank/ fuel pipes etc it'll still be detected in your engine and here's a thing they are able to detect roughly how long ago it was that red fuels were used...basucally, if you're stopped your in trouble deep

Personally I would never use it - I'm too scared. But say you were some housewife in a city you would never get tested. I've never been stopped in either my car or lorry and we even have red diesel at home for the diggers.

I think next time I get a hire car I should put some in for a laugh
