Hi. Our new pup has settled in amazingly. Cannot believe it. Comes when called (in house and garden - not brave enough to try off lead for another few weeks yet!) No messing and sleeps through. Sits for feed etc etc. Cant complain.

However, she does pull on the lead, not enough to annoy me but she is annoying my OH alot. When she is on the lead her eyes become very red, very quickly. Obviously this is from the pulling - which like I said, isnt actually alot (compared to my last 2 staff's she is already a pleasure to walk). BUT the red eyes are really worrying me (we have taken her to my OH's vet's and they have checked them.....any ideas?

Are we going to have to resort to a harness or halti already? I would rather not....also any training techniques you can offer. I have mine (same as training the horse to walk beside me basically) and my OH has hers so we need some common ground!!

Thanks - oooh sorry, its an essay :(

On the plus side.....tomorrow is ADOPTION DAY!!!

What collar/lead combo are you using right now? What age is she?
DON'T USE A HARNESS it will give her the weight advangage, a headcollar would be better.

Why is she pulling? IE is it just excitement on the first ten minutes of the walk, is she dying to get somewhere, is she actually fighting the resistance of the lead?

Good heelwork/non pulling works on the principle that staying beside the handler, on a loose line, equals good stuff. Pulling equals going nowhere/backwards/round in circles.

If she is already straining at the end of the line, there is no point in administering a lead check, it's just a tug of war.

Hi. WE went to the kennels today, they used to walk her on a extending lead damn it so we now have to work backwards :(

We bought a harness today - sorry, did that before seeing your reply.

I think she is just full of excitement. Today we walked her about 20mins then let her off in the little fenced area and played ball. When she wouldnt come to her name we said "right we are off" and made to turn and she bounded up to us each time.....

Hmmm people are mentioning a "loopy"? which my OH wants to try? Any thoughts?

She has been much better today in and around the pet shop / garden centres but that was before the harness went on, we only bought the harness to see if it stops the red eyes.

Use a thinish check chain about three inches longer than her neck circumference, the sliding end MUST come over the top of her neck.Do not allow her to pull into it,a slight check and an about turn will soon have her watching you for direction. The red eyes are due to blood vessel constricture caused by her pulling.Harnesses and halti`s are just an admission of failure to train properly.

Ah yes, extendy leads, on the wrong dog, which does not have distance control, just encourages pulling, and yes, I use one at the mo :p
'So..I pull...and then I get more lead! Yay!' is kinda how the puller sees things.
Plus you have no control, you're holding onto a lump of plastic with one hand and all you have to grab with the other is a thin strip of nylon, ouch.

Lupis are not for me personally, I am sure they work with some dogs but my fella wore all the hair from his underarms and had a big 'X' dug into his chest, he pulled against it so hard, and I pulled a muscle/ligament thingy in my back trying to hold him on it.

As EK says, a choke/check chain would work as a training aid but used correctly, at the right time, the right way round, the right thickness/length and in the right position - but if you're not sure on any of those things, I wouldn't risk doing it wrong. I am bored of seeing huge, too long, heavy link chains sitting on the dog's shoulder upside down!!!

Work on making it fun to be beside you although I have no doubt she will still go a bit WHEEE for the first ten minutes of a walk.
