Hi all,
Am beginning the hunt for a red Labrador puppy. We want a petite, working lab who will be mainly a pet with a little working done here and there. Please can people point me in the direction of breeders. Really want a 'word of mouth' puppy more than one that I've found online!
I am in Cornwall but willing to travel
thanks again

Have a look at Ettinsmoor in Norfolk. Jill Parsons. There are a few of that type at my training club from that breeding. I have a fab young red dog, yet to find him a girlfriend. Most reds in the uk are working lines. Facebook group Fox Red Labradors. No selling allowed but if you PM admin they have a list of health tested puppies.

There are only 3 recognised colours of labradors: black, chocolate and yellow. The yellow can range from pale cream to red. Therefore officially there is no such think as a red or fox red lab they are yellow

But you can sell them for more money if they are darker yellow. :) .
I think it is acceptable to ask for a fox red, albeit a fad, they are a lot nicer than they used to be. Good luck OP, in your search, there must be something in Devon? Do you go shooting at all now? If so look for one you like, find out it's breeding and chase the stud dog's owner. :)

My parents' 1st Lab, a dog, was truly fox-red, his pedigree said 'yellow', we've had cream, gold, yellow and reddish but never one as dark as he was (born over 60 yrs ago). He was a beautiful colour. I was told that the yellow bitch that we've just got is 'fox-red', she is nowhere near as dark as he was and not quite as dark as the next darkest that we had, although she might grow darker as gets bigger/older. Incidentally she was exactly the same price as her black sister.

Incidentally 'chocolate' although now used commonly, is incorrect, it used to be known as 'liver' when there weren't very many of them. Again some breeders think that they can charge more for 'chocolate' than the other colours and breed for colour rather than health/conformation.

Thank you, he's filled out a bit since that pic nearly 2 years ago! I love his temperament. He's so calm when he's around the house and so easy to train. He truly believes that his on'ly purpose is to please me. He goes up a number of gears when training with cold game and really hits warp factor when out shooting.

OP do your homework, check hips/elbows/eyes and also possibly DNA results for inheritable diseases. It won't matter if one parent is a carrier for something so long as the other is clear for that thing then the pup won't have it.
