New baby ned is hunting well. She has gone 6 times now but by now is very fit and badly in need of clipping, so today was a bit of a bazooka ride around...
I was wondering if I should put a ribbon in her tail? As we are a small hunt and I generally only go on Wednesdays (and she bucked like a bronco when I tried one before) I haven't yet bothered. Today though she was a bit itchy and irritable and twice when people let their horses rub on her flanks she raised a leg. Neither time did she kick out, but it was a definite threat. I always ride up the front, so am loathe to put on a red ribbon when it means (IMO) I shouldn't be there. Perhaps a green? Or people should just have better manners and its not her fault at all?
Any thoughts? Shes being clipped before we go out again.

I would put a ribbon in... and ride out of peoples space. It happens that horses can jostle a bit. As for it meaning you shouldn't be there.. maybe you shouldn't if your considering a ribbon?

I don't ride in their space, but they ride in mine!! :)

She doesn't kick if people charge up behind her or whatever and I wouldn't let a horse of mine rub on anyone else so I kind of think its not her fault, but would hate to wallop someone...half term next week, hey ho, Charge of the Light Brigade!

Definately not red! In my opinion members of your hunt should have more respect for other members of the field. Its one of my pet hates when people let their horses rub green slober over your breeches! Let alone your nice clean horse! Also annoying when out of control people let their horses get too close and rip a hind shoe off! Grrr.

I would pop a green ribbon in for a few times when its busy, people should give you both space then.

She's going well then?

Shes pretty good, but we fall in as many ditches as we clear. I hope each one is a learning curve - keeps forgetting shes got 4 legs, only counts three!
My sticky seat is getting plenty of practice!!

i would go green and also used hand behind back in gateways or tight spots. If your a small hunt, people will soon get message that you on young one and i would be very strict but polite about people using your horses' bum as a rubbing post

I do hate people who use your horses rear as a 'drive in parking slot'! shows no manners at all even if your horse never kicks.
If you feel you have to wear a red or green ribbion then do, shows you are being responsible in your warnings. But this does not mean YOU have to ride out of the others way. Ride up the front, in the middle or where you wish. Whoever runs up your arse when a red is on show is the one who's in the wrong.

I personally wouldn't use either as you have been 6 times already . If it's a small hunt they'll know your face and if you didn't put one in at the start why bother now?? It really is other peoples problem if they let their horse rub you  and they get wolloped, they should have more manners.

* forgot - a woman I saw the other day didn't use a ribbon, but a strip of red tape was stuck to the top of her horses tail. Rather a good idea I thought if the tape was good sticky stuff and your horse doesn't like the feel of a ribbon.

I took my old boy one day and was on my bosses land, we were at the back taking it easy and at one point had the field past us twice. At which point he got a little het up and started to reverse quickly!! We were by ourselves on a good wide path but someone still managed to ride up our bum and because he couldn't see going backwards he trod on the horse! Woman had th nerve to huff and do but it was them that run up our arse

Always put green in! If you put red you are admitting your horse kicks! And should really stay at the back! And just a little grooms tip for you, use electritians tape round the tail 3 or 4 times! It stays on better than a ribbon and you can see it all day!

I wouldn't be too pleased if my knee got shattered by a kicker whose rider had knowingly not used a red ribbon, e.g because they didn't want to stay at the back.

Sorry, but kickers are too dangerous to take any chances with.
